Today we will talk about a 2-in-1 notebook with an Acer Switch Alpha 12 removable screen that is equipped with a sixth-generation Intel Core processor and has a passive cooling system.
Design and usability The appearance of the Acer Switch Alpha 12 is more like a tablet with a stand, because the removable keyboard looks like a foreign object.
The screen unit is relatively thick and heavy. The back is covered with aluminum sheet. The reclining leg allows you to select the angle of the screen in a wide range, and because it is rubberized the laptop will never fall, even if it is without a keyboard.
There are not many external ports: 3.5 mm audio jack, USB 3.0 and USB Type -C. All of them are located on the right sidewall. Of course, another USB 3.0 port would not hurt, but it's already nitpicking. There is a slot for microSD memory cards.
The volume, on and Windows keys are located on the left sidewall. The power button has a built-in light indicator that allows you to monitor the status of your notebook. If it glows orange, the laptop is empty.
The keyboard unit is thin and attached to the tablet using a magnetic mount. The magnet at the bottom of the tablet is so powerful that you do not need to get into the connectors, for it will do everything for you, and even with a loud click.
The keyboard is full-sized with a small key stroke, but without illumination. The touchpad is small. It is recessed into the body. To work away from the table it will work, but it is better to connect a mouse in the workplace. The keyboard unit itself is made of rubberized material that does not slip on the table, but at the same time collects all the garbage and dust, which is very difficult to wipe.
To be honest, working behind a tablet without a keyboard is inconvenient. Yet Windows 10 is not good enough for touch control. The keyboard is better, but not as convenient as the compact laptop.
The diagonal of the IPS display is 12 inches, the resolution is 2160 × 1440. Aspect ratio 3: 2. In our sample we use the Panasonic matrix. The brightness varies over a wide range: from 18 to 388 cd / m². Contrast is 1 to 500.
The color coverage is slightly wider than the sRGB triangle. Temperature, only at a minimum brightness above the reference. The gamma is also close to the reference value. Subjectively liked the screen, it has enough saturation. The only thing that it shines under direct sunlight.
Personally, I do not see the point in such a large resolution for a device with Windows 10, because it's impossible to work at 100% mapping. The interface, fonts and shortcuts are so small that even if you have good eyesight, it will be difficult to disassemble the information on the screen. When you scale up to 150%, things get better, but is this an option? However, this question is rhetorical and does not dare for years.
Switch Alpha 12 comes with a stylus. The battery is not used simply, but the LR8D425 is AAAA sized. Let's face it – not the most common size.
One of the features of the Switch Alpha 12 SA5-271 is that it is equipped with a full-fledged Intel Core i3 / i5 / i7 processor of the sixth generation. The amount of RAM is 4 or 8 GB. The built-in solid-state drive can be a volume of 96/128/256/512 GB.
Passive cooling system. To remove heat, a heat pipe system is used. Therefore, the laptop is noiseless.
We have a configuration with an Intel Core i5-6200U processor, 4 GB of RAM and 256 GB of ROM. Strangely, the tandem of the mid-range processor, the top-end drive and only 4 GB of RAM looks strange. At the same time, you can not replace or add RAM – everything is disconnected on the board. It is a small amount of RAM can be called the weakest point of our configuration.
The performance of the Intel Core i5-6200U is already known to everyone. This is not the newest chip, because everything is expected. For all office and non-gaming tasks, it is enough with a large margin. You can play World of Tanks, but you can get a comfortable fps value only at low graphics settings.
There are no problems with overheating either in normal use or in benchmarks. In the System Stability Test in AIDA64 for 15 minutes, the heat stabilized at a maximum temperature of 76 degrees. The case was slightly warm.
Two stereo speakers are located above the screen, which prevents them from accidentally overlapping. They are loud, but there is a lack of low frequencies. Therefore, at the loudness close to the maximum they begin to squeak very strongly.
It would seem that if the device is made in a 2-in-1 format with a removable screen, then it must work long , but it was not there. This design puts the engineers in a difficult task – to place a small battery case in a large volume. Very few people solve this problem.
In our case, the battery life was disappointing. In the PCMark 8 Work accelerated test at 100 cd / m², the battery life was almost 4 hours. PCMark 8 Home accelerated was able to defuse the laptop in 3 hours 18 minutes.
