NVIDIA unveiled a new generation of GPUs Turing with a specialized ray ray tracing unit RT Core (so far only in professional Quadro accelerators)

At its own event within the framework of the SIGGRAPH 2018 show, NVIDIA made the long-awaited announcement – officially unveiled the first graphics processor on architecture a new generation of Turing. A distinctive feature of the new generation GPU is the specialized RT Core compute unit for ray tracing support, an integrated technology that provides content developers with real-time rendering of cinematic quality. As for performance, it reaches 16 TFLOPS in single-precision calculations (FP32), and in calculations of half-accuracy – 32 TFLOPS. Separately, the evaluation of the performance of blocks in the operations of machine and in-depth training – 500 TOPs (trillion tensor operations per second) is indicated. Well, the computational power of the trace is 10 GigaRays / sec.

In addition to the flagship RTX 8000, two more RTX 6000 and 5000 models were introduced, which are truncated versions of the flagship.

Quadro RTX accelerators can be combined using a bridge NVLink. In addition, they support the new VirtualLink standard that connects the VR headsets to a PC and other devices using a single USB Type-C connector.

Now it remains to wait for the announcement of the Turing generation of game adapters and evaluate in practice what the RT Core unit will give and the long-awaited ray tracing in games. Recall, the premiere of the new flagship video game card NVIDIA is expected in a week at the Gamescom 2018.
