Intel 9th ​​generation processors will get up to 8 cores, but the Core i7 series will lose support for HyperThreading

Intel company is gradually preparing for the presentation of new processors of the ninth generation. A special feature of the new series will be the addition of the brand Core i9 and the first 8-core chips to the mass desktop platform (MSDT – mainstream desktop). At the same time, Core i brands expect significant changes, and not all of them will please potential consumers.

So, the new top-end Intel Core i9 processor will get 8 processing cores and support processing 16 instructions streams simultaneously. To separate the brand Core i7 from the new flagship line, we had to make some simplifications. As a result, within the Core i7 brand, in the ninth-generation chips, there will be 8 computing cores available, but support for processing two instruction threads by each core is abolished. Thus, the Core i7 processors of the ninth generation are now characterized by the formula of 8 cores / 8 threads. Compared to the eighth-generation Core i7, the number of processing cores has increased, but the number of supported instruction flows has decreased. Finally, the Core i5 brand will now include 6-core processors that support the processing of 6 instruction flows. There are no noticeable changes yet. All the new chips of the ninth generation are manufactured according to the nomenclature of the technological process of 14 nm +++. The "new" architecture of Whiskey Lake is another result of the development of Skylake, so a significant increase in the performance of computing cores is unlikely.

At the same time, the technical specifications of the three processors within each brand have already become known. The flagship model of Intel, as already mentioned above, contains 8 cores and supports 16 instruction flows. The device contains 16 MB of cache in the third level (2 MB per core). The base operating frequency is 3.6 GHz, and the maximum frequency in Turbo Boost mode is 5.0 GHz. In this case, this frequency is achieved with a load of 1-2 cores. With a load of 4 cores, the maximum frequency is 4.8 GHz, and with a load of 6-8 cores, 4.7 GHz. The TDP is 95 W.

The Core i7-9700K processor received 8 cores, but lost support for HyperThreading. In this case, the volume of the cache memory of the third level is reduced to 12 MB (1.5 MB in terms of the core, as in the chips of the Core i5 of the previous generation). The base frequency is the same as that of the flagship model – 3.6 GHz, but the maximum frequency in the Turbo Boost mode is reduced to 4.9 GHz, and it is available only with a single core load. With a load of 2 cores, the maximum frequency is 4.8 GHz, 4.7 GHz for 4 cores, and 4.6 GHz for 6-8 cores.

Finally, the Core i5-9600K is the most similar to its predecessor. In this case, 6 computing cores, 6 instruction flows and 9 MB of L3 cache are available (1.5 MB in terms of the core). The basic operating frequency is 3.7 GHz. The maximum frequency in Turbo Boost mode for one core is 4.6 GHz, for two cores – 4.5 GHz, for 4 cores – 4.4 GHz, for all 6 cores – 4.3 GHz.

All new chips are compatible with existing motherboards based on the 300 series chipsets, but to install them you will need to update the BIOS. Release of new processors of the ninth generation is expected in the third quarter of 2018.
