and so on…

It has been a very busy week… two weeks actually.  Yes, I have been very quiet in my posts mostly because I have been too busy and too tired to post.

Last week I spent getting ready for a big upgrade at work.  Then, as previously mentioned, I spent the weekend working.  All of it.  It sucked.  And at the end of the weekend I wasn’t even finished.  Tuesday evening I got to complete my work.

Wednesday I started to tend to everything I had put aside for the last two weeks and then I took Thursday off and took care of other business.  Now its Friday and I am dying to get my weekend on.

See, I say it like that so it sounds more hardcore and edgy.  "Getting my weekend on" often entails mowing grass, cleaning and driving kids to kid-events.

In any case, my mother-in-law is arriving for a four-day visit on Saturday.  The weather looks to be GREAT so I am hoping to do something outside.  I mean besides give the grass its last mow of the season.

FYI: the colors are spectacular this year.  I’ve been scolding myself for not carrying my camera with me more often.  I understand that the patriots are playing the San Diego Charges on Sunday - should be a good game.  I understand SD is still pissed off about losing 3 out of the last 4 games.  They’ve been a tough team in the past and without our star quarterback, Tom Brady I think the Pats will have an uphill battle on their hands.

Ok, I guess I can’t put off the rest of my day anymore.  I’m thinking I may need to move Miller Time up to maybe noon-ish.  We’ll see how things work out.

Quiet

Its been quiet here because I have been swamped at work.  That upgrade that we were doing?  I started work on Saturday morning at 6am.  Things didn’t go well because of errors internal to the product and I was up until 2am the following morning trying to get it to complete.  I got up again at 7am and worked through the day until about 5pm when I was completely exhausted and needed to stop.

It was a miserable weekend, really.  And we finally got some solutions to our problems yesterday so now I can take this afternoon and evening to finish the work.  I am also convinced that there is something ridiculously wrong with the system that pushes out the upgrades.  It is very very slow, but it isn’t consuming very many resources (CPU, memory, etc).  There has to be a bottleneck somewhere - I have been looking at the connections to the database.  if those connections were drastically too few it would strangle the movement of data from one place to another and there would be no additional load on the system.  Likewise, if it were waiting for a network connection that wasn’t coming through it would again take forever and consume no resources.

Hopefully I will figure it out before I have to start this beast up again.

On Friday night Gabriel receive cub scouting’s Arrow of Light award - the highest award they offer.  He decided that he would give boy scouting a one-month try.  Ben even decided to return to boy scouts.  I think it was the opportunity to go shooting at a rifle range that piqued Gabe’s interest.  And Ben got an advertisement for a 2010 jamboree in Washington DC that he thought sounded incredible.  It would be nice for them go get enthusiastic about it.  If not, it will be fine.  It just means that I will have to work a little harder to come up with outdoorsey things we can all do.  Naturally what a six year old is capable of will be very different from that of a 12 year old.

Gabe also got a great award from his school for be an all around fabulous kid.  His teacher wrote a note about how the classroom was a happier place with Gabe there and that he was really impressed with him.

So Gabe did well last week.

ok, back to work.

I recently put up some Halloween decorations in my cube.  Ravens, mice,
ratty cloth, etc.  i realized this morning that one of the benefits of
putting up more than one raven was that I could call them “A murder of
ravens”!

but then I doubted myself.  I knew that a collection of crows was
called a “murder” but I needed to double check on ravens.  So I looked
it up and they are indeed referred to as a “murder” or an “unkindness”!

I had a pretty good laugh over that and wondered what other collections of animals were called.

For example and prickle of porcupines.  how silly.  A “mob” of meerkats.  I kind of like that one!

One I didn’t quite believe was a “stench of schnauzers”!!

hilarious.

Have you ever wondered what you call a collection of sasquatches is called?

They may be imaginary, but I guess people still talk about them.  ;)

THEY’RE MADE OUT OF MEAT by Terry Bisson

“They’re made out of meat.”

“Meat?”

“Meat. They’re made out of meat.”

“Meat?”

“There’s no doubt about it. We picked up several from different parts of
the planet, took them aboard our recon vessels, and probed them all the way
through. They’re completely meat.”

Good short story by Terry Bisson.

Just a couple of short things today.

  1. Last night I took the girls on a walk around a local resovoir with me and the dogs.  They didn’t REALLY want to go but I told them that I needed photographers.  We had an ok time.  We got half way around the lake when it started to rain and Grace dropped my camera.  GGRrrr.  It makes me nuts and I scold myself for letting someone so young use my camera.  Maybe its just my own passive aggressive way of getting a new camera.
  2. While Gabriel was on his skateboard he ran in to a pebble and went flying.  He was wearing a helmet (which got scratched up pretty good) and got some road-rash on his arm and his knuckles.  Other than that he’s fine.  But I think he maybe needed a good spill to remind him about how much these things can hurt.
  3. This weekend we’re going to be doing some upgrades at work, so I have to plan on being online all day on Saturday and in to the night.  Its going to be a long day and I’m not looking forward to it.

That’s it for now - mostly life is good!
