Mostly, things are fine. The weather stinks today - 45 and rainy - but you can’t have everything right? Work got a little weird yesterday. Over the last few years my employer spent lots of money to buy up companies that would complement their business. The basic idea was sound, but then they never seemed to follow through to incorporate their new aquisitions. They weren’t assimilated properly. Every company still had its own finance department and its own HR department and its own policies.
So over the last few months they’ve been making a concerted effort to bring everyone under the same roof and make it all one big happy family. Well, except for the 300 people who got laid off yesterday. They’re screwed. In IT I think we lost maybe five or six people. Not bad, I guess, but still disconcerting.
I do good work and have a strong reputation so I have no fear for my particular job - as long as they still have an IT department I think I will be a part of it. But I hate seeing good people let go. Everyone spent the day waiting to see who would be the next to march in to the HR-department and get the axe.
Afterwards, I took the boys to Boy Scouts and dropped them off. It felt good to be able to leave them and not get involved. I don’t mind helping out and I still like the outings they have - camping, climbing, caving, etc. But there are also other things I want to do and its very easy to get all of ones’ time sucked in to something like that.
