A couple of things before the weekend

  1. Liz and the girls are very eager to go see that new American Girl movie, Kit Kittredge: an American Girl.  I was trying to figure out how to get out of it when Liz read my face and wondered aloud if there was a “boy” movie playing that me and Ben and Gabe could go see.  Turns out Hellboy II: The Golden Army opens this weekend AND its PG-13!!  So I can take my peeps.  I’ll just have to preface the movie by pointing out that its fiction and no matter what they see, they should never try to do it at home.  Whatever it is.  I think the movie is aimed at boys of this age group, so I think it will be ok.  The early reviews are in and look good.
  2. I finished all my recent books so I wanted to get to the bookstore and see what else I could rustle up.  Google Maps said there was a Barnes and Noble over in Lawrence, MA.  Based on the arial photo of the place, it looked like a giant bookstore so I was very pleased.  I had heard that Lawrence was one of the most troubled cities in the state but I figured it couldn’t be all bad with a bookstore as big as that!  So I drove through some shady/dicey neighborhoods where the shop signs were alternately in spanish and Vietnamese.  There was a fair amount of garbage and urban decay and I was starting to think that B&N had made a very bad mistake in this location.  When I approached the big parking lot, I began to understand what happened.  It was a community college parking lot in the middle of a bad section of town and the Barnes and Noble was actually the school’s text book store.  That big building in the photo is a gym or a swimming pool or something.  So I came up empty handed from my lunch-time expedition.

all better

The Bon Jovi concert has come and gone and I’m relieved that its over.  The subway was a great way to get to the show at the TD Banknorth Garden.  The seats were fine.  We were close to the edge of the balcony about half or two-thirds of the way to the stage.  So we could see pretty well.

“The All American Rejects” opened for Bon Jovi.  I’m not a fan.  I thought they were a weak opening act.

The kids were great.

Until about 9:15pm.  Then Gabriel and Grace were getting too tired and started to be miserable.  Since Bon Jovi isn’t really my cup of tea I volunteered to take them home so Liz and Chloe and Ben could stay for the show.

It was a great relief and getting home was no trouble.

Liz arrived home with the other kids about an hour later because they too were too tired to stay out.

All in all, I think it was a mistake to bring the kids and I wouldn’t do it that way again.

Now its time to look forward to other things.

The concert starts tonight with the All American Rejects opening at 7:30pm.  Crikey.  Stop the madness.

I keep denying it …

I got it for the kids.  Originally, I thought they would love it.  But as time as gone by none of the kids has shown any interest of it, so it sits there moldering not far out of reach.  As I walk by I look at it with regret and consider what might have been.

But I got it for the kids.

So after I’ve finished all my work and my chores are done I sit in my favorite chair just to enjoy a little quiet time.  And there it is.  Prodding me.  Reminding me.  Nudging me and calling to me.  I pretend to ignore it, but it knows how I feel about it.

So I eventually cave because I am weak and unable to deny the inevitable.

My name is Private Idaho and I’m a Guitar Hero Addict.  Thank god the Aerosmith edition just came out!

it was a good vacation (summary)

We had a good time in Vermont over the last week.  We always enjoy going to Smuggler’s Notch because it has been one of the few places we felt comfortable giving the kids the freedom we need and they deserve.  They’re getting so grown up now that Ben and Gabriel were able to go off most of the days without us.

Chloe and Ben and Gabriel all learned the basics of skateboarding.  They have a nice skate-park there and each of them got 90 minutes of lessons before getting turned loose.  Ben picked it up in about thirty seconds and was going down some of their ramps the following day.  He did really great.  I’ve never seen him take to something so quickly!

After a few initial defeats Gabe wanted to walk away but I managed to convince him to keep trying.  He’s not used to physical things being difficult for him.  He got better and within 60 minutes he was saying

“Normally, I look good, but now I am good!”

Funny kid, eh?  When we left Chloe was still struggling with it.  I don’t know if it will ever be her “thing” but she had a lot of fun with it.

Ben and Chloe went off on overnight trips to a second ski lodge with their camp groups and both returned saying they had a good time.

Ben and Gabriel did a “video camp” where they filmed and produced short video clips over the course of four days.  They had a great time doing that!  I’ll see if I can upload the videos to show you what they did.

Gabriel tried “Mountain Boarding” - its a kind of a skateboard with big knobby tires made for going down grassy hills instead of concrete ones.  He had fun but fell on his head a lot.  Don’t worry, I got LOTS of good video of it!

Liz and I rented a pair of Segways and had a great time.  They’re very cool machines and the ones we were on were called X2 versions because they were heavy duty, geared differently and had large knobby tires to carry one over difficult obstacles.  We went through the woods and up a mountain and had a great time.

I did a lot of reading, which was nice.  I don’t normally get much time to read and have found that I really like it a lot.

I took the little woman antique-ing.  While it isn’t exactly my cup of tea, she seemed to like it a lot.

On the fourth of July there were fireworks in the mountains which were pretty good.  There was a really good small-town parade in nearby Jeffersonville.  There was also a small bazaar-thing where the local scouts and elks and fire dept raised money.

The dogs came back just fine and I was very happy to see them again.

So, all in all, it was a great vacation because everyone came back healthy and happy.  Its mostly nice to be back.  I’m facing some yard work & gardening.  I goofed when I planted my corn a  while back and I had the kids plant the corn too shallow.  A lot of the corn came up and then fell over and died.  stupid.

Chloe and I have managed to save seven plants.  ugh.  I don’t think we’ll get ANY corn worth saving from it.  seven.  So I think we will keep trying to convince these seven plants to grow.

oh and there are some photos of the first day or two of the trip at Flickr.com.

This had something to do with water balloons - I think someone was launching water balloons at the kids and they were all going crazy trying to catch them.

things are going well

The kids all went to camp yesterday from 10am until 4pm.  They all had a good time.  Grace came back a little sad, though.  She didn’t pass her swimming test on the first try so she wasn’t allowed in the big pool.  She said that when the lifeguard asked her to tread water she didn’t hear him.  So the lifeguard failed her.  We went to a pool party last night and I asked her to show me how she swam and while she isn’t a strong swimmer, I think she should still be able to pass the test.  She showed me how she treads water and it was the same thing - she probably couldn’t tread water for 15 minutes, but I bet she could do it for five.  So, if they’re inclined to give her a little leeway I think she’ll pass.

Liz and I went on an “extreme Segway” tour yesterday morning.  It was every bit as much fun as it looks like.  These segways are made to go off-road and have large knobby tires to power through mud and up hills.  It was great.  We had an awesome time!  After lunch we went in to town and did a little grocery shopping.  Then we came back and sat down for a few minutes.

When I woke up an hour later it was time to get the kids from camp.

In the evening they had some kind of “country fair” thing with local vendors selling things like organic honey, fossils/stones and frozen meat.  They had face painting, henna tattoo and massage (gracie loved her three minute massage).  Chloe got 17″ of hair wrapped in string - it looks super.

Today the weather looks less promising so we’ll see how it goes.
