Public Service Anouncement …

On this, the most haunted day of the year, I thought this was an important service to offer my friends and colleagues. Its a documentary about how to survive a zombie attack. Be safe! Happy Trick or Treating…

Also, now that you’ve studied and presumably are somewhat prepared in the eventuality of a “Zompocalpse” Click below to see how ready you are for the real thing. Sadly, I think I would be Zombie-food.

Zombies and children and Kowloon, oh my!

The weekend was excellent.  Sure, enough, on Friday night we went to a friends’ 40th birthday party at a local Chinese restaurant.  Everyone had a good time and the guest of honor looked like she was really enjoying herself when we left around 8:30pm.

We went straight to the second party where we only stayed for about fifteen minutes – by then it was about 9:30pm and the kids were up a long way past their usual bedtimes and needed to go to bed.  Grace was whiney and complainy.  The other kids, though seemed to be doing ok.

On Saturday morning I was very tired.  Super tired.  So tired that I decided that we didn’t really NEED to get up at 7am go to swimming lessons.  Now I feel kind of bad about it and wish I had gotten off my lazy ass and taken them swimming.  It was cold on Saturday and raining and I was very tired from the night before.  But I think I should have cowboy’ed up and taken them to the pool.  Afterall, its not like *I* had to swim.

In any case, we dropped to dogs off at the puppy-resort and then boogied up to Westbrook, ME to see some old friends.  Their girls and our girls get along really well and me and Liz really like the adults.  So we get together once every couple of months.  This time was kind of special because our friend, Mike had been an extra in a zombie movie called “2”.  Here are some still photos from it.  The movie premiered on Saturday night in a small milltown called Biddeford.  We spent the afternoon visiting and getting dressed up in Zombie costumes.  A babysitter arrived to babysit all seven kids (Whoa!!) and we took off for the City Theater.  We had a great time there – all kinds of people dressed up as zombies of all types: kid-zombies, old-fart-zombies, pimp-zombies.  It was fun.  We watched the movie and it looked like it was a lot of fun to make.  It was a terrible movie, but looked like a lot of fun.  The same production company is making Lobsteroids and some other bad, bad movies.

We spent the night in a hotel that was right around the corner from our friends’ house.  It was a lovely B&B but the owners had thoughtfully (thoughtlessly?) turned the heat up in our room… to eighty degrees.  Me?  I was fine.  I took a shower and dropped off right away.  Liz was up for a while unable to sleep due to the heat.

We came home on Sunday morning after breakfast and spent the afternoon taking it easy.  The kids carved pumpkins and I watched football.  I wasn’t feeling all that great – I guess I’m not accustomed to having so much fun in such a short amount of time!

All in all it was a pretty good weekend.

The Sox swept the series!!

Boston will be nuts again for a while.   Boston is a big sports town and there’s a lot of excitement here about how well they did at the World Series.  Its easy to get swept up in the excitement.

And in the OTHER sport, the New England Patriots beat the daylights out of the hapless Washington Redskins.  And I won $25.

Life is good.

Love Halloween

This is going to be a very busy weekend.  Want to see my schedule?

I have to leave work early to go home and get Ben at 2:03pm and then race home to meet Liz and the other kids.  Then we all jump in the van and high-tail it to Tewksbury for Avid’s annual SpookyTrail event.  The different departments set up spooky and/or themed exhibitions for h kids and everyone has a good time.

We spend the late afternoon walking all over the Avid office campus.  Afterwards we race back home – we have to be back there by 5:30pm, because that’s when our babysitter arrives.  At that time we run off to a surprise birthday party for a friend while they go to a Halloween party at another friends’ house.  We will probably stay at the party for a couple of hours and then meet the kids at their party.  The evening will end when can’t stand any more fun and retire for the night.

Tomorrow morning we get up at 7am and get ready to go to swimming classes in Wakefield.  While Liz is supervising the swimming operations I will drop the dogs off at the kennel.  I’ll come back and get the kids and Liz and we’ll all get a little breakfast out somewhere.

Then we drive up to Maine to wish some friends a happy birthday.  Their little girls both have birthdays close to each other so we’re going to celebrate that.  And coincidentally there’s a zombie movie opening that same weekend with a pre-party event going on!  Our friends have gotten a babysitter so we will leave the kids home and go out dressed as zombies for a party and a movie!  Finally, because of limited space our kids are sleeping over at our friends’ house and we are staying at a hotel nearby!

On Sunday I think we have to focus on getting home and getting homework done and maybe resting up a little.  I think there’s a good football game on Sunady.

How awesome is that for a weekend?!

I have spent all day not fixing a problem …

I great deal of my work is fixing technical problems that have come up on different SAP platforms.  Sometimes I examine SQL statements to see which one is generating all the load on the system.  Sometimes I have to install new software or write some new program that will show me the information I need.

Sometimes I set up new interfaces between different systems.  Sometimes I set up new security for users or create new users.  Sometimes a function in SAP doesn’t deliver the expected result and the users look to me to explain why.

Today, email doesn’t work in SAP.  So its been up to me to understand why and fix it.  Its been difficult because its not working the way its supposed to.  Every time I want to make a change I have to restart the software, which is difficult because there are a lot of people doing user acceptance testing.  So my alternative is to add an application server to the central instance.  This will allow me to bounce the server without impacting anyone.  Sadly, the server wasn’t working.  So I needed to track down the problem with that.  It turned out that the memory hadn’t been tuned correctly so I had to adjust the kernel parameters so it would start using the right values.  After that SAP still wouldn’t come up.  Then I found some network settings that were incorrect, only the changes I was making wouldn’t take effect, so I had to find the unix-guru to fix that.

FINALLY I got all those environmental things out of the way, only to find out that some of the startup scripts that SAP uses were a complete mess.

Now its 3:10pm and at last I can get to work.  Sometimes my days are more straight forward than others.

WOOHOO!!

The red sox beat the daylights out of the colorado rockies last night.

Red Sox

We let the kids stay up a a half-an-hour past their bedtime to watch the start of the game.  And I have to admit, it started off great!  The Rockies got to bat first and Boston’s pitcher, Josh Becket struck all three of them out right away.  Then the first Red Sox batter got up, Pedroia, and on the second pitch he hit a homerun!!

It went downhill for the hapless colorado rockies after that.  At one point they brought in a relief pitcher with two outs and the bases loaded with red sox.  The pitcher WALKED three batters one after the other!  amazing.

Final score: 13 - 1

I couldn’t stay awake past about 11:15pm but nothing else happened in the last couple of innings.

Kids are well.  The wife is well and I am well.

Email from home

I got the following email from the little woman this afternoon:

Hey, I was filing papers and getting rid of out of date stuff today, and guess what I found! Your passort, AIS school id, etc! I am TOTALLY taking your passport to show to Heather this afternoon. You had some bitchin’ feathered hair goin’ on!

Oh, good. She’s discovered old photos of me and she’s showing them to all her friends.  This can only be good news.

Sportsbook

1. I went to www.sportsbook.com and made a $50 deposit, so I could place a bet on the World Series. The redsox are playing and I feel obligated to make some kind of demonstration of my supoport. So, if they win the world series I will win $25. I’ve placed a couple of bets in the past and done quite well. i won $500 once betting that the New England Patriots would beat someone by three points. I was pretty luck, I have to admit.

2. We’re in the midst of some big upgrades at work. I think I will have to work on the weekend of 11/10 - which is the same weekend my kids’ boy scout troop will be going camping. I wanted to go on this despite the frigid temperatures. I think that’s also the same weekend my wife’s sister is bringing her aunt up for a a visit. I don’t know how that will turn out.

3. It turns out that at Ben’s school dance someone was running around with a pushpin jabbing people with it.

4. I took Ben to scouts tonight. They spent the time cleaning tents. See, many years ago the troop purchased about eight Diamond Brand Free Spirit I tents. They’re three person tents and really do look pretty good - bomb-proof. But they’re 20 years old.

ok - that’s it. I’m pooped. I need some rest. Sleep well!

There’s always something going on …

The weekend was fine.  Somehow it never really came together for me.  Sports-wise – I couldn’t have been happier.  The red sox managed to defeat the Cleveland Indians in a relatively exciting game.  I confess that I’m a bad red sox fan.  Baseball is a little slow for my tastes and every time things get ugly for the sox, I get convinced that they’re going to fail.  See?  I’m a bad fan.

Sunday was a wonderful day, weather-wise, but somehow I felt kind of lousy all day long.  I had to take down the air conditioning units while not feeling well and it really knocked me for a loop.  I just felt terrible all day – tired and sluggish and sometimes even a bit queasy.

We went out for a while to get our annual autumn pumpkins and I made the most colossally stupid mistake.  *Sigh* I’ve never done this before in all my years of driving, but I actually ran out of gas.  Unbelievable.  Yes, I am sure that you, my fans, have completely lost faith in me – much as Britney has let us all down.  We were on the highway doing 75mph when the gas pedal suddenly became unresponsive and the van started slowing down despite my foot stabbing at the gas pedal.  I figured out what was going on and cursed.  Yes, AAA came quickly when called – their tow truck showed up in about 15 minutes. And the only thing that got hurt was my pride.  Oi.

We succeeded in getting our pumpkins but that’s about all.  We spent some time toodling around northern Massachusetts enjoying the weather and the colors.  Then we came home and spent the afternoon doing chores.

Hey, here’s something!  Ben went to his first dance on Friday night!  A girl asked him to go with her – you know, not “together” or anything… just together.  He made sure everyone understood that this wasn’t a date – just as friends.  It was kind of cute.  So I took him to the dance and had a talk with him on the way about what drunk and stoned people act like and told him to stay away from anyone who had been drinking or smoking.  He seemed to get it and all was well.

But shortly after 9pm I got a call from him saying that he wanted to come home because people were getting stabbed!!  Wha-wha-what?!?!   I didn’t ask many questions and zipped over there really fast.  It turned out that someone had something sharp and was going around cutting people as he walked by them.  What did they have?  It was hard to tell from Ben’s description.  It could have been a razor, a box-knife or even a thumbtack.

I was amazed!  He was a little scared about everything.  He didn’t run away – he went and found the girl who invited him and made sure she was ok before calling me.  The two of them went outside where it wasn’t as cramped and waited for me.

So today I hope that he will have gotten news from the school about what happened.

On Saturday we did the swimming-lessons-thing and the kids had a good time.  We distributed candy to the cubscouts until about 1:30pm when we took grace to her soccer practice.  She asked yesterday if they showed soccer on TV.  We said they did. And she said that she wanted to play soccer on TV.  Great.   She’s not really very enthusiastic about soccer and keeps asking when we can go home, so I think it may not stick.
