Its a Heat Wave
Without cooling off overnight, heat keeps rising - Local News Updates - The Boston Globe
I just noticed that its 96 degrees at home. I have to admit that its pretty flippin’ hot. I came back in from lunch where I walked half a block and was drenched in sweat. It occurs to me on days like this, that awful weather is one of the reasons I went in to a technology profesion in the first place. When its stinkin’ hot outside I spend my day in air conditioned comfort. On the downside when its 75 degrees out and sunny I’m still stuck in air conditioning and flourescent lighting.
Yesterday it was hot, like 94 degrees, but it felt fantastic. I called up a buddy and told him that we had to escape the office and meet for a few beers. We haven’t seen each other in 18 years and he just moved to Boston a few months ago. So we met at the Aquarium and had a great time. Well, I did. It could be that my buddy was just humoring me. We sat there and watched the tourists in very little clothing go by. It was an excellent spot for having a few beers and watching the world go by for an hour or two.
Afterwards I went home, had dinner and washed the dogs. There’s no AC in the bathroom so by the time I was done I was sweating like a pig. I took Ben over to his boy scout meeting where they were cooking a chocolate cherry dump cake for the troop. He said later that it went very well and everyone liked the cake and did their part. There were some behavior problems with some of the kids and its making Ben a little nuts. He’s a patrol leader, so he’s trying to keep his patrol under control and making sure they behave in scout-like ways. It doesn’t sound like they’re getting it though.
Meanwhile, I was at a cub-scout committee meeting where I think I failed to make new friends. People kept talking about all kinds of things INSTEAD of what we needed to focus on. I actually had to stand up and yell at everyone.
On the one hand, I think that among adults one should be able to wait one’s turn to talk and speak one’s opinions persuasively. What was going on, though, was that people kept ignoring the person in charge and kept having second and third conversations. While I was trying to get people to focus one pair kept raising their voices so they could be heard over my shouting. The good news is that I can shout louder and stronger than they can. It really pissed me off. That shouldn’t be necessary.
So I don’t think i made any new friends. But we DID get our jobs done and we decided on the issues that needed resolution.
Do I regret have to holler at my colleagues and friends? No, I guess I don’t. It was really rude of them to keep talking about other things and not focus on what needed to be done. I would do it again.
Ok - back to work!
