On Friday night we had some of Ben’s boy scout patrol members over to practice their cooking skills. I got out the dutch oven and they made a dump cake with mixed results. Ok the results weren’t so mixed. It was awful.
The directions neglected to tell the careful reader to mix water with the cake mix before cooking. So although we cooked the recipe at 350 for about 30 minutes, it really only turned in to 350 degree powder. Cake never materialized. We tried to rescue it but it was a pretty sloppy mess that the kids dubbed “Exploded Penguin” as a joke referring to their patrol’s name: “Exploding Penguins”.
I thought it was pretty funny.
In any case, they stayed over until about 9:30pm. We all slept in somewhat on Saturday. Gabe had a birthday party to get to. I mowed and trimmed the yard. It was thirsty work so I think I spent the afternoon rehydrating with varying kinds of beer. Again, the results weren’t so mixed. I was just as thirsty at the end of the process as I was at the beginning!
I also repaired some Adirondack chairs and took care of some minor chores around the house. It was a fine way to spend an afternoon.
Sunday we went down to Plymouth to have some breakfast and go to some of the tourist sites in the city of Plymouth as opposed to Plimoth Plantation. It was also a pleasant way to spend part of a day.
When we got back I took the kids swimming. The three older ones are swimming around just fine. Grace is just starting to be able to swim (very) short distances of about 10’ or so. If she can get significantly better by the time we go to Smuggler’s Notch at the end of July she may not need a life vest in their pools. If not… well, she may wind up feeling like kind of a baby instead of the “big kid” she’s getting used to being.
We had a quick supper then Liz and I took the three youngest kids to the cemetery for bicycle riding practice. Grace took Gabe’s old 15” bike while Chloe stayed on her big girl bike. They both needed the time to get used to their bikes. Although Chloe is still a little wobbly Grace was trying a bike that was MUCH larger than what she’s used to. She went from a teeny-tiny 10” to a bigger 15” – which still seems awfully little! I put the seat all the way down and her toes still just barely reach the ground.
I’ll post some more video of the two of them. Chloe has registered some jealousy over the last video that showed so much of Gracie and so little of Chloe.
I know that Liz planned to take the kids swimming this afternoon and I may take them back to the cemetery again for more practice after dinner.
So it was a moderately busy weekend. Actually, it was pretty nice – a pleasantly slow pace.
Liz agreed that she would like to go on a long weekend visit to Niagara falls with me and the kids, which is great. I was afraid she wouldn’t want to go and I would wind up taking all four kids for a weekend get-away all by myself. Now we’re trying to figure out when we want to drive out there.
