Dallas

Welcome to Dallas!

I also have a training class coming up at the end of February (2/25 - 3/2) in Dallas.

I said, “Dallas?! In February?! Hell yeah! Sign me up!!”

I don’t actually like Dallas much. I was there once years ago but stayed mostly in the ‘burbs. I’m staying there again, but this time I am damned and determined to find something interesting to do there in the evenings.

Verizon - VoiceWing

Did I tell you I signed up for Voice over IP from Verizon? The adapter kit is supposed to arrive in a week or so.

I’m very excited. I also saw Verizon doing a lot of work in our neighborhood and I was told to expect Fiber Optic in my town in the spring of 2007. So I’m hopeful FiOS arrives soon!

What’s new?

The Year of a Million Dreams

I know I haven’t posted anything in a while. We’ve been as busy as bees buzzing through our various routines.

One big event is coming up, though. We’re going to Disney World in lovely Orlando, Florida from March 7th through the 11th! The kids are really excited. I know some people manage to get to Disney on a regular basis - I knew one guy who went down there once every few months. When he retired from HR he moved down there and got a job in a Disney golf pro-shop.

But we’re not those people. With four kids its a tremendous expense and requires a lot of effort to get down there. Years ago we decided to go once. Yes, only once. We decided to wait until all of the kids were old enough to enjoy it but still young enough not to be a pain-in-the-neck teenager about it.

That’s this year.

Grace is four (almost 5), Chloe is seven, Gabe is nine and Ben is 10 (almost 11). I think we’ve hit the sweet spot of disney enjoyment. I think from here on out it gets trickier.

So we’re making the pilgrimage. It seems like a mandatory event now. last year some kids were teasing Ben because he had never been to Disney World! Isn’t that amazing?! I think it is. But it seems like these days EVERYone goes to Disney World.

Its been decades since me and the little woman have been, but we think this is the right time. We’re pulling the kids out of school so we can avoid the school vacation crowd. Sure we’ll hit some crowds but we’re hoping to sneak in between school-vacation and spring-vacation crowds. My research confirms that this week should be a good one.

We’re going to be staying at The Wilderness Lodge. One of the nice perks of staying at one of Disney’s resorts is that when we check in our luggage in Boston, Disney will retrieve the bags in Orlando and take them to our rooms at the hotel!! Isn’t that great?!

We also signed up for the meal plans - some friends who went said that in the end the value fo the meal plan was tremendous and there was far more food than one (or six) could possiby hope to consume.

I ordered a video from Disney that’s all about what’s going on this year in the park. When we announced the event to the kids we followed up it up with this video to show them all the things that are there. We’ve also been orderign Disney movies from Netflix to crank up the kids’ excitement levels.

I’ve gotten a couple of books on vacationing in Disney and I guess I should make some plans for how to attack the park(s). When I was a kid (15yo) we went and found that going first thing in the morning and then leaving for the afternoon to return again in the evening was a great way to avoid the terrible crowds. We may do that with this trip.

If anyone has any suggestions I’d love to hear them.

Big pack meeting tonight

As you know I’m deeply involved with cub scout pack 615 right now.  I’m their fundraising monkey, I mean “chairman”.  So I have a number of obligations.  Ben meets twice a month with about eight other boys and a leader to do their Webelos-thing.  They often do some kind of craft/construction/community project.  Likewise, Gabriel meets twice a month to do the same kind of thing.  Once a month there’s a pack meeting.  At least once a month there’s a committee meeting.  There are outings and other pack events that may be things like a hockey game, ice skating, hiking, camping etc.  There’s usually at least one or two of these things per month on a weekend.

You can see how scouts can quickly come to dominiate a household.

Tonight’s pack meeting is a big event.  No, not because its “Skit Night”, where each den performs a skit.  Its because Benjamin will receive his “Arrow of Light” award and participate in a cross-over ceremony wherein he will stop being a cub scout and start being a boy scout.  Its a big deal and I’ve asked Liz to come too despite her having never attended one of these things.

So that’s a big deal for tonight.

The rest of the weekend is wide open.

Advice for the ages

I used to be a carpenter and lighting technician of sorts for the theater in college. When we got really jammed up and something just wouldn’t fit no matter how tried to coax it there was an age-old axiom that came in to play:

“If it doesn’t fit, get a bigger hammer”

Fifteen years later its still sound advice today.

Party today

My employer is a small biotech/pharmaceutical company. they’re still very small. Today they are having their third annual Groundhog Day party at a neighborhood brewery.

No, they don’t have an Arbor Day party. And no Labor Day party. Not even a Columbus or Presidents’ Day Party.

Why Groundhog Day?

Because they do some of their medical testing on Groundhogs.

( BWAAAHHAHAHAHAHA!!!! )

(I think its hilarious. Don’t get me wrong, I’m sorry the groundhogs had to get injected with Hepatitis, but something was going to be on the ass-end of a needle and it might as well have been a groundhog.)
