How funny is a given show?
it was a sad tuesday when scrubs didn’t come on. I thought there was still a lot they could do with it. Admittedly, the stuff that went on OUTSIDE the hospital was kind of dopey, but I still thought they were coming out with fresh material and it was one of the few shows that made me laugh on a regular basis.
I was reading something on salon.com that suggested you measure a comedy show’s value by how many times you laugh. The author pointed out that if you get one or two good guffaw’s out of a show then its a keeper. Otherwise, for the majority of comedies maybe you smile or are gently amused throughout but you’re not really LAUGHING about it, you know?
I used that criteria to guage most of the crap I watch and decided that there are only a small number of comedies that are worth keeping.
Two and a Half Men - its a keeper. I usually laugh out loud several times during this show. Liz isn’t crazy about it, but it keeps me in stitches.
My Name is Earl - its borderline. I get some pretty profound chuckles out of it.
Finally - and I’m not proud of this one:
America’s Funniest Home Videos - An hour of people falling on their asses and getting whacked in the nuts. What could be funnier? Seriously, I burst out laughing maybe 25 times in an hour of AFV. Its a guilty pleasure because the humor is of a lowest common denominator variety. And how many times can you see a skateboarder wipeout and still think its funny?
I don’t know, but when I’ve seen enough I’ll let you know!!
WHEW!!
Funny stuff.
