Thursday ROCKS!
(it doesn’t really)
Last night was Gabriel’s Den 3 meeting. Someone came and talked to them about the water cycle: you know it rains, and the rain falls on to the ground where it seeps down to the water table and eventually finds its way to a lake or ocean. Although it’s a dull topic the kids were enthralled. I think the woman running the discussion was really good with kids and had a great way of keeping them engaged.
I talked with the cub master about fundraising issues. He also mentioned that the local boy scouts had issued an invitation to our Webelos to go camping on November 18th. I think it will be REALLY cold then but I don’t think they care much. They’re going to hike from downtown to a Boy Scout camp three+ miles away where they will unload their gear and set up their tents and whatnot.
I haven’t decided how I feel about this. Liz thinks I should take Gabriel along who is actually older than some of the Webelos but isn’t in a Webelos den. I haven’t wrapped my brains around that one yet – I may look in to moving him up to a Webelos 1 den if there are other kids his age there. In any case, even though Gabe isn’t technically eligible to go, Liz thinks I should take him along anyway, or not go at all.
Truth-be-told: I’m not sure how excited I am about camping out in November in Massachusetts; you know what I’m saying? Are you feeling me on this? I may be able to drive up there, dump our gear and just walk the three miles along with everyone else, except without a pack. I’ll have to give it careful consideration.
Grace came in the house yesterday afternoon and she was all upset. Liz could hardly understand her. She said some unintelligible gibberish and Liz was able to pick out something about her being scared by something in the backyard. Then she figured out that the dogs had whatever scared Gracie. Liz went out there and the dogs were going CRAZY barking at something in the grass! They had cornered something and were yapping their heads off. What was it?
A snake.
Well, sort of. It was only four inches long. I guess its still a snake, but at four inches I’m surprised it scared anyone. When Liz approached she said the little snake had the attitude of a much larger snake and it was hissing and snapping at anyone or anything that got close. Liz wound up flipping it in to a dog bowl with a nearby stick.
So that was yesterday’s drama.
I’m beat. I’ve been working extra hours this week and I put in a very late night wrapping up the popcorn sales on Monday and never quite recovered. Then we had Halloween followed by Gabe’s den meeting. Here it is Thursday and I’m ready for a break.
I’ve started watching two new shows this fall and can recommend them both. I tune in to Heroes every week and have been enjoying trying to figure out what’s going on. The superpowers-angle is kind of cool too. But there’s another show called “Jericho” that I am really digging. In the first episode we know that a nuclear bomb goes off, possibly in Denver. The show focuses on a small town in Kansas that has been cut off from the outside world after they witness the mushroom cloud. And although the story has some potential I really admire the way they tell the story. At the end of each episode I find myself on the edge of my seat wanting more.
On Saturday night we’re supposed to go out to a local comedy club with a pair of couples. I’m a little ambivalent about it.
We have more swimming on Saturday morning. I’m still very supportive of this and don’t mind taking the kids because they seem to get a lot out of it and are becoming much better swimmers.
I think that’s it. Well I guess I should do some fall cleanup – like raking leaves and doing one final mow of the grass before retiring the mower for the season. Things like that.
