So the weekend is gone already. I definitely need longer weekends. Sunday night arrives far too quickly.
Saturday night was the boys’ official “Bobcat Ceremony” where the cub scout pack awarded them the initial rank of Bobcat. The guys who run the pack like to make a big deal out of it, and I approve. They do it at a local park just after sunset. An “indian” chief arrives to lead them to the location of the ceremony where there’s a bonfire and each cub scout is named individually and shakes hands with the cub master, who is dressed up as an indian. Everyone cheers and claps. Its a pretty excellent and wholesome event.
We did that from about 5:30pm until about 8pm. The rest of the day we spent doing some errands. In the morning we went to the kids’ swimming lessons. That was good and I’m very pleased with their progress. Its been a very good experience at the NE Vo.Tech.
We went to Ingaldsby farms and gathered up the pumpkins that we will carve in to Jack-o-lanterns. I haven’t decided on a design yet, but often look to “Nightmare before Christmas” or “Sleepy Hollow” for inspiration in this regard. I think they have very creepy looking jack-o-lanterns in those films.
On Sunday morning I got the oil changed, filled the van with gas and went to circuit city to see if I could get a gizmo to wirelessly send a television image from a transmitter to a receiver. The point would be that I don’t want to have to run co-axial cable through all the walls where I need it to go. Yes, I found such an item from Phillips but I couldn’t make it work and Liz didn’t like the look of it. So, we’re back to square one: running cable to the kitchen. Its going to be a lot of work and I will have to be very careful in how I do it to make sure it doesn’t come out horrendously ugly.
Around noon the babysitter arrived. In the afternoon Liz and I went to Harvard Square in Cambridge: it was quite a trick because the famous “head of the charles” rowing regatta was being held that day. I guess its an internationally famous rowing competition. But I’m not so plugged in to the rowing community that I knew anything about it when I moved here. Nonetheless, judging from the traffic it looked like tens of thousands of other people knew about it and were attending. We took kind of a circuitous route to get there but did manage to get parking and went to a lovely little chocolate shop/caffe. We each had a slice of authentic Linzer torte. I had a nice espresso to go with it and Liz had an Iced Chocolate that was amazing. I saw some other people with hot chocolate and it looked incredibly rich and creamy.
Afterwards we went to Mount Auburn cemetary and did an official driving tour of the place. It was ok. Outside of being an amazingly dull presentation of an interesting place the tour didn’t really tell me very much about the place. I was left wanting more information.
We finished off the day with dinner at Polcari’s - a favorite italian restaurant.
Also it looks like Buckaroo isn’t even pretending that he has to stay in his pen any more. He woke me up this morning at 5:30am to let me know he had to go out. There were no puddles on the floor. No piles of poo. And nothing had been destroyed while he had been unsupervised.
I guess its time for the pen to get put away. He’s a pretty cute and cuddly dog so it will be nice to have him out and about. I am sure he will make some messes and that will be not-so-nice. We will just have to finish his training now.
Tonight is Ben’s cub scout den meeting. I have to return the dutch oven that liz seasoned for them. It was very nice of her to do it and I’m sure they will appreciate it. It was rusty and was looking pretty bad. Liz did a great job cleaning it up.
Tomorrow I understand there’s a committee meeting that I should go to: there will be questions about popcorn sales. As time wears on I will probably attend fewer and fewer of these committee meetings.
That’s it for now.
