End of the week
So the week is over. Yes, it was a short week, but it was very busy. We had Liz’s father visiting us until yesterday morning. Overall the visit went very well. In fact it was much better than I expected. I won’t get in to the details of what I was expecting, but we did a lot of things and made some good memories.
I took him deep sea fishing on the Yankee Freedom. On Sunday morning we got up early and because Sam had said that he loved Denny’s we stopped there for breakfast.
The boat departed at 8am and shortly after 9am we were fishing at Stellwagen Bank. The weather was perfect and we had a very good time. Same actually caught a haddock and I had something bite my hook, but I lost it on the way up. It was 200′ down! Anyway, we were out for half a day, which was about the right time.
We also spent an afternoon putting together the kids’ model rockets in preparation for this weekends’ launch. I helped Chloe and Ben put theirs together while Sam handled Gabriel and Grace’s. Now we have four rockets that are (mostly) ready to go. One rocket still needs to be painted, but I have some great shiny metalic spray paint that should make short work of it this evening.
Chess. There was a lot of chess. Sam relished whalloping the kids at chess. But I have to hand it to him, he could take it as well as he could dish it out — he enjoyed getting thrashed by me too. And in fact, it put me in the mood to play some more so last night I got out the old chess program and played a few games. Wow… I stink. I wanted to just play a happy little fun game and several of the pretty boards were locked until you won 50 games in ranked play. So I went to the ranked play section and proceeded to make stupid stupid mistakes against easy opponents. I attribute that to th efact that it was later in the evening after work and after I had mowed the lawn. But I sure kicked myself hard for making such simple mistakes. I’ve decided that I would like to play several games a week just to keep my head thinking in the right idrection, you know?
We went to America’s Stonehenge, a 4,000 year old site with Stonehenge-like stones set up to mark astrological events (equinoxes and the like). There’s also a sacrificial table with a sort of gutter carved in to it, ostensibly for blood, I guess. Sam had heard of it for a long time and really enjoyed visiting it — he said it was the highpoint of his trip.
So we had a good visit and the kids got to know their grandfather. On Sunday we’re planning on going up to Maine to see some friends - I think we’re going to a river to go swimming and picnic-ing. Liz (especially) is all visitored out and needs a break. So we’re looking forward to a nice quiet weekend.
