Its been quiet today

The Sneeze - Half zine. Half blog. Half not good with fractions.

Its been quiet because I’ve been working my ass off at work — there just aren’t enough hours in the day to meet my deadlines. Fortunately, its not my fault that I’m not meeting them and I’m making sure that my boss knows whose fault it is. He seems like he’s got a good understanding of the problem.

Nonetheless - as I was waiting for some database statistics to build this evening, I went poking around one of my favorite sites: http://www.ehowa.com (Ernie’s House of Whoop Ass) which led me straight to the “Steve Don’t Eat It!” website.

The first entry is hilarious and is all about Steve eating “Ralph’s Potted Meat”.

Go read it.

Now.

Scouting

On Friday evening I signed the boys up for cub scouts. I took the boys to the last pack meeting of the year. The whole pack meets once a month while each Den meets once a week. A Den is usually a group of four to eight boys and the Den Leader. This particular pack meeting was a pain in the neck because they spent about 90 minutes giving away awards that had been accumulated over the course of the year. So it wasn’t that interesting. Nonetheless the boys each found friends of theirs who were already cub scouts.

Gabriel will be in Den 3, which is a group of “Bear” cubs. On Sunday there was a “bicycle rodeo” — we couldn’t make it so I’m not exactly sure what went on. I was told that there would be a bike mechanic there and that adults and boy scouts would teach the cub scouts how to do tricks on their bikes. I think the Melrose Dept. of Health was going to be there to ensure everyone’s helmet was adjusted correctly.

But on 7/8 there’s a model rocket launching going on up in Amesbury. I was encouraged to go get several model rockets and then we can shoot them off. The boys will flip for that. I think there’s also some kind of sleep-over in august after a trip to Rhode Island to see the Pawtucket “PawSox” play.

Ben is a second year Webelo. Webelos transitions boys from cub scouts to boy scouts and they have slightly different uniforms than cub scouts. They also tend to do more adventurous activities than cub scouts.

Over the summer it will be important for Ben to work on completing the requirements for “The Arrow of Light” - its the highest award a cubscout can achieve and is the only patch a new boyscout can put on his shirt. I’m looking forward to helping him catch up on the things that the other Webelos have already done. While there are a lot of requirements there’s also a lot of flexibility. So if we can’t find a geologist but we CAN find an artist then we can choose different badges to fulfill similar requirements.

We’re going over to the scout store this evening so we can pick up their uniforms and their all important handbooks. The handbooks will help us figure out which badges to do first.

Also, while we’re doing Webelo stuff, Gabriel will be able to fulfill his own requirements for his Bear badge.

First comes BobCat, though. Every cubscout has to finish BobCat because that introduces the boy to the cub scout oath and the motto and what the scouts stand for.

I’m looking forward to all this!

The World Cup starts tomorrow

World beaters? - The Boston Globe

Here’s a rundown of the USA’s chances from the Boston Globe. It looks like their first game is against the Czech Republic. Then there’s Ghana and Italy (but I’m not sure about the order). I thought I read that the CR is ranked second in the world and Italy has an outstanding team as well.

So, the bottomline looks like although the Americans may have their best team ever, it still won’t be enough to advance to the second round. They’re giving 7-1 odds of getting to round 2.

Good luck USA!

We’re stuck with a terrible war and a worse president, and all the GOP can do is scream, “Pelosi and her Nancy boys are coming”? This is pathetic.

Its a good read and right on the mark. I always did like Garrison Keilor. He seems like a very sensible man.

An unlucky day

So today is supposed to be an unlucky day. The date, June sixth, 2006 is also 6/6/06. I guess the town of Hell, Michingan is having a big party.

Hah! And here it is, nearly six minutes after six in the morning!

I understand there’s a betting house offering odds of 100,000 to 1 on the question of whether or not the appocalypse will happen today. The guys on the news are right: what happens if you win. How do you collect?

Dance Dance Weekend, Part II

Sunday was a relief. Saturday turned out to be such a busy day and capped such a long journey that we took the day off on Sunday. That is, Chloe and Ben didn’t get home from their second show until about 10pm. And they were both asleep when their heads hit their pillows. Ben slept until 8am or 9am – very unlike him. I guess he needed the rest.

But we had taken care of our chores and necessary work on Saturday so on Sunday I felt ok about being less productive. Also it continued to rain so it wasn’t like we could go outside and do much. In the morning I read the newspaper and took a couple of loads of boxes over the storage unit. I got soaking wet and the boxes were heavy so I worked up a pretty good sweat hauling boxes out of the basement and carrying them up the stairs to the van. In the end I felt like I had put in a pretty good effort and gotten something done.

I had promised Peterman that I would get him some more dog food so I returned some movies and spent some time at the pet store. Liz reminded me that today would be his birthday so she and the kids insisted on getting him some treats to mark the occasion. Afterwards we got some lunch. Somehow it came up that Gabriel didn’t have anything that he was interested in reading so I suggested we go to Barnes and Noble to see what we could turn up. We had a good time and each kid got a book to bring home. Benjamin got another Bionicle book, while Grace got a Spongebob Book. I don’t remember what Chloe got but Gabriel got a fantasy-based book with a very scary looking guy on the cover. His head was a skull with big antlers. Anyway, that got his attention and he spent about 10 minutes reading while we were in the store.

When we got home Liz got some well-earned personal time at the mall. The kids were all so interested in their books that they all immediately sat down and spent the next hour or so reading! Well, Gracie didn’t – I spent about 10 minutes reading her book to her. Chloe spent the afternoon coloring pictures for a website she wants me to put up for her.

So it was a really nice way to spend a Sunday!
