On Friday evening I signed the boys up for cub scouts. I took the boys to the last pack meeting of the year. The whole pack meets once a month while each Den meets once a week. A Den is usually a group of four to eight boys and the Den Leader. This particular pack meeting was a pain in the neck because they spent about 90 minutes giving away awards that had been accumulated over the course of the year. So it wasn’t that interesting. Nonetheless the boys each found friends of theirs who were already cub scouts.
Gabriel will be in Den 3, which is a group of “Bear” cubs. On Sunday there was a “bicycle rodeo” — we couldn’t make it so I’m not exactly sure what went on. I was told that there would be a bike mechanic there and that adults and boy scouts would teach the cub scouts how to do tricks on their bikes. I think the Melrose Dept. of Health was going to be there to ensure everyone’s helmet was adjusted correctly.
But on 7/8 there’s a model rocket launching going on up in Amesbury. I was encouraged to go get several model rockets and then we can shoot them off. The boys will flip for that. I think there’s also some kind of sleep-over in august after a trip to Rhode Island to see the Pawtucket “PawSox” play.
Ben is a second year Webelo. Webelos transitions boys from cub scouts to boy scouts and they have slightly different uniforms than cub scouts. They also tend to do more adventurous activities than cub scouts.
Over the summer it will be important for Ben to work on completing the requirements for “The Arrow of Light” - its the highest award a cubscout can achieve and is the only patch a new boyscout can put on his shirt. I’m looking forward to helping him catch up on the things that the other Webelos have already done. While there are a lot of requirements there’s also a lot of flexibility. So if we can’t find a geologist but we CAN find an artist then we can choose different badges to fulfill similar requirements.
We’re going over to the scout store this evening so we can pick up their uniforms and their all important handbooks. The handbooks will help us figure out which badges to do first.
Also, while we’re doing Webelo stuff, Gabriel will be able to fulfill his own requirements for his Bear badge.
First comes BobCat, though. Every cubscout has to finish BobCat because that introduces the boy to the cub scout oath and the motto and what the scouts stand for.
I’m looking forward to all this!
