The next big thing in music

Antony and the Johnsons - Free Music Downloads - MP3 Downloads - Download.com Music

So apparently the next big thing in music is “Antony and The Johnsons”. I heard someone on the radio saying he was the shizzle and to look for him. Sure enough I keep hearing how he’s going to be big. and everyone will know his name.

I hate this music. I can’t stand it. Holy christ its an unholy warbling that grates on my nerves and makes me want to stick a fork in my eye in the hopes that the pain will be worse than what ANTONY is doing to my ears.

So, I’ve provided a link so you can experience a similar pain.

How was xmas 2k5?

How was Christmas? It was good. Really good. Chloe woke up at 5am followed shortly by Ben and Gabriel. This meant that the dog woke up and needed to go out and get fed and take care of his usual routine. So I got up at 5am and grumpily took care of these things before pointing out to the kids that they were up way too early — the sun was still two hours from coming up — and not coincidentally, I also was two hours from getting up.

I told them they could open their stockings and wait until 7am for everyone else to get up.

I think it was some kind of exquisite torture for them waiting those 120 minutes for me and Liz to get up. I savored every second!

Normally my folks are with us for Christmas but they stayed home this year. We had a more moderate number of presents under the tree and the kids loved virtually everything they got. Although I told my brother that the scarves his wife knitted for the ladies in my family were nice and the yarn was very cool I didn’t get a chance to say anything to her directly, and I should have. I will.

The big gift I got this year was the tremendous Calvin and Hobbes hard-bound retrospective collection! I was very excited about it. Its now cozying up next to the similar version of the Far Side collection. They’re both beautiful sets and I’m slowly working my way through it.

Liz whipped up a delicious breakfast around 9:30am and we spent the rest of the day cooling our heels and enjoying the new presents and having everyone home. The kids behaved really well. Ben and Gabriel spent their whole day in their room working on a Star Wars Lego Clone Trooper Troop Transport. Gabriel usually sat nearby playing a Pokemon game (emerald or fire) on his new gameboy. The girls played well together sharing some crafty-things they got and playing with their new dolls.

I read the newspaper and took the dog for a walk and read some of the Calvin & Hobbes book (vol.1).

It was great!

On Monday we went to the mall to exchange a top-notch 14″ frying pan I had gotten for Liz at William Sonoma. She said it was too big and that she would prefer the 12″. I know, a frying pan sounds like an awful present, but it was the kind of pan Liz would never have gotten for herself. It was pretty expensive. And in my mind that puts it in the “gift” category. She says she likes it and appreciates it — she also hasn’t hit me with it yet, so I choose to believe I got her the right thing. We also went to Borders and used the gift cards that the kids great grandmother sent them. Finally we enjoyed a nice lunch at Bugaboo Creek Steakhouse. Yippee! Liz isn’t crazy about the place but me and the kids really like it.

We took down the tree already. I thought it was too soon. I enjoyed looking at it and everything. Its very nostalgic and I like to sit in front of it smiling. It makes me feel good about where I am in the universe. But Liz has been preparing for christmas for months now and I guess she’s a little christmas’ed out. She said she really would like it to get out of the house because its taking up too much space.

Its fine really. I would have preferred that it stick around longer, but my feelings weren’t strong on the issue.

Now I have one more day back at work and then I will take nearly another week off. Beautiful. I’m looking forward to spending some time outside — maybe checking out some geocaches I haven’t been to. I can’t take being stuck in the house and I like going for walks in the woods. I’m thinking of heading a little farther north — Harold Parker State Park and Bradley Palmer State Park aren’t really all that far, but its far enough to make it an adventure.

I’ll let you know how it goes. Happy Festivus!

Happy Holidays

Work is very slow today and I’m having trouble focusing on anything including writing anything here. I’ll be out of work for the next week or so. Actually I think I’m scheduled to be back in on Tuesday and then I’ll take the rest of the week off.

Merry Christmas!

Letter from Howard Dean

Governor Dean is right on the money, I think. In fact, I think he’s being reasonably charitable. From where I sit, it seems to me that the Bush administration looked at this law, understood it and then decided to violate it. They knew that what they were doing was in direct violation of the law, but they thought they knew better than congress and decided to do something different.

I think Bush, specifically should be indicted and sent to jail for five years for violating this law. He doesn’t deny he did it. He just says he thought it was best for everyone if he went ahead and broke the law. How can he think that he’ll get away with that?

I’m sure he will, though. Anyway, here’s Howard Dean’s letter:
————————————-

This is not an easy letter to write, and I’m afraid it may be a hard one to believe.

By now you have probably heard the news that George Bush is using the National Security Agency to conduct surveillance on American citizens without the consent of any court. After initially refusing to confirm the story, the President has admitted to personally overseeing this domestic spying program for years and he says he intends to continue the program.

These actions explicitly violate a law designed to protect US citizens. But the administration says that other laws somehow allow for this unprecedented use of a foreign intelligence agency to spy on Americans right here in the United States. According to reports, political appointees in the Justice Department’s Office of Legal Counsel wrote still-classified legal opinions laying out the supposed justification for this program.

I have asked our General Counsel to draft a Freedom of Information Act request for the relevant legal opinions and memos written by that office. Since the program’s existence is no longer a secret, these memos should be released — Americans deserve to know exactly what authority this administration believes it has.

You can help pressure the administration to release these documents by signing on to our Freedom of Information Act request in the next 48 hours:

www.democrats.org/foia

This extra-legal activity is even more disturbing because it is unnecessary — the administration already has access to a secret Foreign Intelligence Surveillance Court. That court was created precisely to provide speedy, secure judicial review to the actions of our intelligence agencies.

To allow authorities act as quickly as possible, officials can even apply for a retroactive warrant days after the surveillance has already begun. Secret warrants have been approved over 19,000 times — only five applications were rejected in nearly thirty years. The court, which regularly acts within hours, is hardly a roadblock, but it prevents abuse by providing the oversight required by our system of checks and balances.

This administration must demonstrate clearly what legal authority allows it to disregard criminal prohibitions on unilateral domestic spying. Sign on to the request now — it will be delivered on Thursday:

www.democrats.org/foia

In an interview on Monday, Attorney General Alberto Gonzalez admitted that the administration asked certain Members of Congress about getting a new law to allow spying on Americans without a warrant. Realizing that even a Republican-controlled Congress wouldn’t authorize such a measure, they decided to manipulate current law and proceed with the program anyway.

Manipulation of a law like this is dangerous. The same Office of Legal Counsel used vague assertions of sweeping authority in the infamous torture memos. The victim of this reasoning is the rule of law itself — when this administration asserts sweeping authority to step over any line of legality, it asserts that there are no lines at all.

Does this administration believe there are any lines it can’t cross? Americans deserve to know. Join our Freedom of Information Act request now:

www.democrats.org/foia

Some Republicans will try to pretend that this is just another political fight. But Americans of every political viewpoint are rightfully disturbed by this extra-legal activity. The Republican chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, Arlen Specter, shocked by the report of this activity, promised to convene hearings in January.

Even Bob Barr, who was one of the most conservative members of Congress and the first member to file articles of impeachment against President Clinton, said:

“What’s wrong with it is several-fold. One, it’s bad policy for our government to be spying on American citizens through the National Security Agency. Secondly, it’s bad to be spying on Americans without court oversight. And thirdly, it’s bad to be spying on Americans apparently in violation of federal laws against doing it without court order.”

We need to know whether George Bush went beyond the limits of the law — and whether he and his administration believe that there are any limits at all. Please join this important request:

www.democrats.org/foia

Even after the press found out about these actions, the administration tried to cover up its existence. According to Newsweek, George Bush summoned the publisher and executive editor of the New York Times to the Oval Office to try to stop them from running the story of these illegal activities.

We have seen this kind of arrogance of power before.

Richard Nixon once said in an interview that, “if the president does it, it can’t be illegal.”

He found out that wasn’t true. This administration may need a reminder.

Thank you.

Governor Howard Dean, M.D.

Cough

I think I said already that I’ve got pneumonia.

It doesn’t worry me or anything but its annoying as hell. I’ve got this deep painful cough that I can’t seem to shake and its exhausting.

I went to the doctor’s last week and he gave me some antibiotics but they don’t seem to be doing any good. I swear if I’m not significantly better tomorrow I’m going to go back to the doctor and get something else. This is for the birds!

I don’t know how the people I work with put up with it.

The weekend: The Christmas Season

Better late than never. I had decided early on that this would be our big weekend for making Christmas preparations. And that’s just what happened.

On Saturday we went to our favorite farm in Georgetown, MA. We poked around outside and I have to admit that it wasn’t a great selection for us. The trees were all too large. They were beautiful, but unfortunately too big for my small living toom. Liz found a tree that looked good but whose needles were already falling off. The man looking after everything suggested I get a different tree.

I thought that was great. He could have sold me the crappy tree but warned me off it instead! Additionally he suggested the kids could roast some marshmallows over his fire. We had a nice time doing that. We went inside the farm stand to sit near the wood burning stove and drink hot cocoa and eat cider donuts. They really hit the spot because it was cold and snowy outside.

The xmas tree man had suggested that if none of the trees on the lot were what I was looking for I should try cutting my own. Just down the road they had a saw and twine sitting out so whoever wanted to could cut down their own tree and come back to pay for it.

I thought this might invite theft, but they didn’t seem to have a problem with it. We drove over and within 10 minute Gabriel had spotted a tall tree that wasn’t too full but wasn’t wiry and skinny either. It was a perfect tree, I think. He was proud to have spotted it and I cut it down and dragged it back to the car through the snow.

After paying and going home we set the tree up and set about decorating it. We had a fine time. I prefer a tree with the lights tucked deep inside the branches instead of on the tips because I think it gives the tree a light almost from within. Its very pretty.

That took us through the afternoon.

Yesterday I took care of some chores around the house before trying to go to home depot to get some parts to stop the tub’s faucet from leaking. Inside the handles of the tub’s faucet are a pair of “cores” that control when and how much water to let out when the knob is turned. At least one is shot because the damn thing won’t stop running. So I went to home depot and they had a million of these core-things and I had neglected to bring one from home. Additionally they didn’t have any of the environmentally friendly ice-melt! Dopes.

Shortly after I got home Maria showed up to finally pick up the guinea pigs. So if any of you were waiting for your chance to own a pig — you’re going to have to get it somewhere else because I (FINALLY) don’t have any.

We’d like to put a desk and a computer where the pigs used to be. It would be the kids’ computer. I’m still leaning towards a Mac… but there are some appealing things about a Windows PC too.

After lunch we grabbed the kids and took the T in to Boston. They always love the train and the excitement of going in to the city. We took them to The Enchanted Village. There used ot be an old time department store in Boston called Jordan Marsh. Every year in their Downtown Crossing location they would devote most of a floor to their “Enchanted Village”, which was a collection of animatronic manequins set in idyllic christmas/wintry scenes of nostalgic whimsy. It started in the 1940’s and continued until Jordan Marsh was bought by Macy’s a few years back. After that Macy’s decided not to have it any more so the City of Boston took it over. This year it was in the Hynes Convention center near the Prudential Center in downtown Boston.

The weather was crisp and there was snow and ice still on the ground but it was a lot of fun. The kids had a fine time at the Enchanted Village but I think they liked the rest of the outing even more. Maybe I’ll take them to the Frog Pond sometime soon for skating. I know they would like that.

But I’m a lousy ice skater. I would have to stay on the sidelines and watch.

We had a good early dinner at Appleby’s and then came home. Everyone was tired by then and we all settled in for some xmas cartoon specials. Olive the Other Reindeer, Rudolph The Rednosed Reindeer and I think some Frosty.

You know, the usual suspects.

So it was a pretty festive and enjoyable weekend.

Fire up the barby! We should so totally have some kind of beach party.

The weather looks awful outside. It snowed about an inch last night then freezing rain fell for a couple of hours and now I think that’s changed over to rain. And its, like only 33 degrees.

And the clouds are so dark and heavy that it looks like night. I keep waiting for daybreak but I know its not coming. I suppose in a few hours the dim light will wane and it will just get even darker.

No fricken-wonder people like to light xmas trees and decorate houses at this time of year! Its miserable out there!
