ABC News: Miers Withdraws Supreme Court Nomination

But will the next nominee be even worse? Who knows? i mean, really, who can tell? There was so little info on Meiers that there’s nothing to compare her to.

Nonetheless, I always imagined that if Bush nominated her she could only mean trouble for the good guys.

Thank god this travesty was corrected

Bush administration to reinstate Davis-Bacon wage rules - Oct. 26, 2005

To me this whole event was quick way to test out some stupid conservative monetary policies to shaft the poor (the ones least capable of defending themselves). All these rules that were temporarily suspended were there to protect workers.

Conservatives are desperate to roll back new deal policies that protect the poor and this was their chance to demonstrate what kind of hew and outcry would be raised. They wanted a chance to show that nobody really cared about the poor.

Maybe they were right, I didn’t hear too many people getting upset about it.

Black Betty

I think the song was originally recorded by Lead Belly.

I should find that version. Someone did a more recent version that rocks pretty hard - I dig it. I’ve seen the same version attributed to a couple of different groups:
Spider Bait
Lynard Skynard
Nazareth
Ram Jam

Ok, I just gave them a listen and the SpiderBait version is definitely different. It still rocks and I still dig it, but I have the same version listed three times attributed to three different groups.

I also have a recording of Tom Jones doing it. Its not bad, but it adds a cheesy, lounge-lizard sound to it.

Now I just heard a club-mix version of it from an album called TRANCEHOUSE 2. I think “Flashback” recorded it.

Its a great song, even in a dance/techno/house mix

We didn’t expect this

CNN.com - Floridians face weeks without power - Oct 25, 2005

About 6 million people in the Sunshine State were without power, Gov. Jeb Bush said.

“That’s by a factor of five or six, the amount of people who didn’t have power with [Hurricane] Katrina in the Gulf states region,” Bush said. “So it is a serious issue.”

When it rains, it pours

ABC News: ‘Superstorm’ Forms

“We don’t know what we’re going to do,” Fergus said. “It’s a horrendous situation.”

Oh good. Lots of rain. Lots of wind. Maybe some flooding. Possible wind damage. Although, I have to confess, to the best of my knowledge my house has never had any damage from wind or rain. We get some moderate water seeping through the wall in the basement, but it runs off in to a “drain” in the floor.

Its not really a drain. its more like a “hole” in the floor. But I have to admit that it provides good drainage!

One problem may be that the dog, while he’s better at relieving himself in the rain - he still hates it and based on this morning’s performance would rather leave a load in the kitchen than in the rain. Grrr!

Does anyone use an RSS reader to view this?

The reason I ask is I added a photo to my RSS-feed — you know, to dress it up a little.

Has anyone noticed?

(its ok, you can lie to me, just so long as its to save my feelings)

Oh good…

ABC News: Wilma Restrengthens to Category 3 Storm

See? it just doesn’t get any better than this.

Monday and back again

The weekend was fine. Saturday was pretty busy, but sunday was less active than I’ve been in years. On Saturday morning Liz took Gabriel and Chloe to their soccer game. At 8:15am it was only 39 degrees. The kids came back covered head to toe in mud and Liz confirmed it was freezing and wet an the kids’ team lost 7 to 1. To his shame one of those 7 points came from Gabe. He was trying to kick a ball clear of the goal and (sadly) landed it in the back of the net instead.

While they were out Ben helped me put the air conditioners away — I guess its about time, eh? I got all three of the remaining units stored without any trouble. I finally put the inflatable swimming pools away. I don’t think we’ll have much more need for them this year.

At 11am Chloe had gymnastics. Liz took her to that.

At 12noon I took the remaining three kids to Ben’s soccer game at the Melrose Common. Ben lost that game, but the goals that were scored against his team were not while he was in goal. He’s doing quite well in that position and enjoys it.

I got some photos of Grace-face there; I’ll have to make sure I post a couple of them.

Then things kind of settled down. Me and Gabe took the dog on a walk to watch rugby at Pine Banks field. There were a couple of good soccer games going on too. So we spent an hour or so at that and quite enjoyed it.

I spent a good chunk of the afternoon grilling ribs and drinking beer. The girls and the dog kept me company. Although the ribs were meatier than usual they were also laden with fat. I didn’t overcook them, but the fat was unpleasant. I wound up eating most of a rack of ribs.

Some friends of the kids spent the night so their mother could have some private time. She promised to repay the favor, which is quite a promise! She’s done it before so she knows what she’s getting in to. I also trust her with the kids. I don’t know when she’ll be able to repay us, though.

In the evening we watched “Signs”. It was enjoyable but it didn’t really grab me. One interesting bit is that it arrived as part of our new Netflix subscription. Liz suggested it and we’re liking it so far.

Sunday we had the kids until about 1:30pm. The previous days’ rain continued. It was below 45 degrees all weekend and wet wet wet. It was pretty miserable, so we didn’t mind letting the kids stay inside and play video games and watch TV more than usual. I took the dogs for a lot of walks. For the first time in literally years, I was bored. A lot of the chores I would normally do were either done or off limits because of weather. Having the guests over kept me from wandering off somewhere.

Now Wilma is barrelling up the coast and is expected to bring several more inches of rain and lots of wind. We have soccer practices tonight and tomorrow, though. I hope we don’t have to go. This soccer-stuff better wrap up soon.

Its a silly joke

Yes, I know its a silly joke, but it took me completely by suprise so I liked it:

“Fishy Story”

A man was stopped by a game warden in Northern Minnesota recently with two buckets of fish leaving a lake well known for its fishing. The game warden asked the man, “Do you have a license to catch those fish?”

The man replied to the game warden, “No, sir. These are my pet fish.”

“Pet fish?!” the warden replied.

“Yes, sir. Every night I take these fish down to the lake and let them swim around for a while. I whistle and they jump back into their buckets, and I take em home.”

“That’s a bunch of hooey! Fish can’t do that!”

The man looked at the game warden for a moment, and then said, “Here, I’ll show you. It really works.”

“O.K. I’ve GOT to see this!” the game warden replied.

The man poured the fish in to the water and stood and waited. After several minutes, the game warden turned to the man and said, “Well?”

“Well, what?” the man asked.

“When are you going to call them back?” the game warden prompted.

“Call who back?” the man asked.

“The FISH.”

“What fish?” the man asked.
