there’s a pecker at work. He’s a pain in the ass really. He
takes things personally and blows things out of proportion. He’s
in a different group from me and I don’t have to work with him very
often, which is good. Sadly, we had to argue in front of everyone
today. I was telling him about some security changes that were
going to be necessary to accomodate that damned Sarbanes-Oxley
legislation. Basically, the audit department doesn’t want IT to
be able to update business data.
when you sit down and think about it, that’s not asking too much.
I mean, it makes things easier if we have the ability to wander willy
nilly all over the system being able to do whatever we want, but that
means the business has to invest an inordinate amount of trust in
us. We’re all trust-worthy people but that’s not really the
point. Audit has to be able to assure our owners that their
business is safe.
anyway, I was explaining to this colleague of mine that this means
we’ll have to take away some of his security. He said that was
unacceptable and he couldn’t put up with that. He barked at me
that someone has to get screwed and its always him. I tried to
bring him back down by telling him that this wasn’t getting
“screwed”. I tried to explain to him that this might mean that he
would have to turn the testing over to one of the business people who
are authorized to make changes to business data. He got all bent
out of shape and there we were going back and forth in front of the
rest of my team and other teams.
other guy wandered over and thought he would help settle things down or
offer some suggestions but I guess I covered everything ok because he
shortly meandered off.
team isn’t responsible for making the rules, just for implementing and
enforcing them. In the meantime I’ve got this jackass giving me
shit because he says this will make testing impossible!!
had altercations with Nimrod in the past and he often blows things out
of proportion to an unreasonable level. Like saying that this
will make testing impossible when the fact of the matter is that it
will just increase the amount of time it will take to complete the
testing. He’s not looking at it with a level head and he blew his
stack.
everyone on my team thinks this is very funny and people from other
groups and congratulating me on putting Schmendrick in his place.
Sure it feels good to have my colleagues appreciate that I can stand up
to this guy and go toe to toe with him — I just wish it wasn’t
necessary to do this every year.
