There
are two mascots that Smuggler’s Notch uses:  Mogul Mouse and Billy
Bob Bear — or something like that.  Clearly Mogul Mouse is the
lead character, though — he’s got his own magic ski lift after all.

They
had both characters walking around hungging the kids and posing for
photos the whole week we were there.  Gracie especially loved
Mo-Mo Mouse and didn’t give a hoot about BillyBob Bear.  Come to
think of it he spooked her a little and she would always skitter away
behind my legs to hide from Billy Bob Bear.

Although I spent some of

Although
I spent some of Sunday and much of Monday cutting down trees it was
still preferable to being at work. I don’t have a sensible tool for
dropping trees, like a chainsaw. So I had to use a reciprocating saw.
See, over time the back fence was slowly ripped apart by trees growing
through the chainlink fence. And now there are large gaps at the top
and bottom that needed to be repaired. I wish I could have straightened
out the chainlink, but I couldn’t. Instead I needed to raise the top
bar so I would have something to attach my existing wire fencing.
So I had to cut down some trees to accomplish this. The largest was
maybe 10″ across. Little guys, really. I used up my last reciprocating
saw blade on the first tree when I brought it down. So when it came
time to chop it in to bits, I used a circular saw. While this tore
through the wood in an almighty hurry, I know it was dangerous. The cut
it produced was also very shallow. So I would have to go back with my
crosscut handsaw to finish the cut.
Then I used a pair of loppers to cut all the branches in to little
bits. My neighbor will use the larger pieces of wood in his fireplace.
But all the damn branches and leaves and sticks had to be put in to
yard waste bags.
Eight of them altogether.
I am quite sore today. In my shoulders. And my arms. And back. and my
legs.
But it was productive. I got the fence all put back together so
whenever we bring
Peterman home he won’t be able to wander off.

I’ve finished Harry Potter and the
Goblet of Fire. I’ve started Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix.
I have to finish them all over the next month. Partly because there’s a
movie coming out but also because there’s a Harry Potter symposium in
which Liz is very interested that’s starting on 10/6. Its in Salem, MA
and I think its supposed to be a sort of whimsical but academic
exploration of Harry Potter.

While I’m no literature major I can
argue themes and have reasonable discussions about literature. But I
MUST at least have read the material!! People will be making jokes and
references to things I may not know about. So I have to finish these
last two books prior to 10/6.

Ben got an ear infection and was
quite put out by the pain and discomfort on Sunday. Tylenol helped
some. On Monday morning some liquid came out of his ear and we thought
maybe it was just some water that had been trapped in his ear.

But the pain persisted.

So at 11:30am we took him to the
doctor’s. He explained that water HAD been trapped in there and that’s
what allowed the infection to grow. He perscribed some antibiotic ear drops and encouraged him to take tylenol until the pain went away. The antibiotic was some variety of “cipro“. I only recognize that name because it was the primary antibiotic recommended by the CDC to treat Anthrax.

Potent stuff!

He’s feeling better now but is still run down.

I’ve found some people at work who
are very interested in going on this fishing trip of mine. But so far
nobody has donated to the cause. I’ll let you know how that goes.

I better roll. Live long and prosper.
