Apparently Peterman isn’t crazy about

Apparently
Peterman isn’t crazy about the rain.  He won’t take care of any of
his bodily “business” outside in the rain.  Liz says the downside
to this is that the only other place is in her kitchen!  He’s
going to have to learn to take care of this stuff in the rain or
something, I think.

Its been raining off and

Its
been raining off and on for a couple of days now.  I took Peterman
for a walk yesterday after dinner.  I am still trying to get him
more comfortable on the leash before we begin training in
earnest.  I’m interested in getting him proficient at sit, stay,
come, heel and down.  No, I guess I don’t need a leash for several
of these, but it would be helpful for several of them.  We’ve been
working on “sit” already.  We’ve been practicing “come” but
without any real method.

Last
night we met Mike and Greta, who is a 6-year old female boxer.
They live on the road behind ours and are very friendly.  Peterman
immediately went in to play mode and began romping with the giantess,
Greta. She was kind of hesitant but soon romped back a
little.  Nobody left their leashes and it was all very friendly
and social.  Shortly we left them and met a twenty-something dark
haired woman who immediately started coo-ing at my adorable little
friend.  He yipped in greeting and tried to run towards her.

Apparently he’s a friendly and outgoing little guy.

We turned a corner and met some kids who all had to come over and pet him.  It started to rain a little bit.

As
turned the last corner to start coming home we met a mother and her
infant.  She asked the dogs age and breed and coo’ed at him.
The rain started coming down in buckets so we found some shelter under
a tree where we rested for a couple of minutes.

A
range rover approached us in reverse with a woman on a cell phone
shrieking about how cute Peterman was.  Turns out she has a
red-merle female of breeding age.  The woman was very keen to set
up a date with Peterman when he comes of age.

That sly dog already has a date!

She was disappointed to hear that we plan to neuter my short friend.

When we finally got home we were both soaked to the bone but it had been a good walk.

Sunday was fine.  We spent

Sunday
was fine.  We spent the morning killing time really.  I got
up early with the dog again, but it meant I got to sit in the backyard
in the cool early morning air reading the newspaper while Mr. Dog
snuffled around the yard.  At 11:30 Liz took the girls to their
birthday party and me and the boys departed for our fishing
expedition.  We picked up some sandwiches and went to Horn Pond in
Winchester.

We didn’t catch a thing.  Not even a nibble.

Well,
Gabriel caught a fish, but it was too small so they had to throw it
back.  Maybe “Caught” is the wrong word.  “Found” is
better.  It was lying on the beach.  It had died several days
before.  But I told Gabriel it counted because after all, what is
“catching” a fish but finding it?  Still, it was only three inches
long and although it had already done us the service of dying ahead of
time, state law forbids keeping a fish of that size.  So the boys
tossed it back.

The
whole idea of fishing didn’t really catch on with the boys.  I was
perfectly content to sit on the bank focusing on the bobber but they
got restless pretty quickly.  I think they don’t have the patience
for it.  So after a couple of hours we called it day.  We had
changed locations once and had no better luck at our new spot.  We
really only spent about 30 minutes at each of our sites.  I didn’t
want to force them to fish so acquiesced to going home.  When I
had planned the event I had imagined that they might like to go climb
trees or something while I continued to fish.  Maybe I should have
let them go enjoy themselves while I tried harder to catch a
fish.  I should definitely have done that.  I think we were
running low on water and drinks and it was starting to become
unpleasantly hot out.

Anyway
we came home and I did some chores for a while until the girls came
back.  They had a good time at their party.  Chloe was eager
to hear about the fishing.

I
took Peterman on a walk and it turned out well.  He walked with me
like he was supposed to!  That is, he didn’t heel or anything but
he stopped struggling and fighting the leash.  He seemed to give
in on the whole idea of the walk.  It was much nicer than the last
time.  We met a bunch of girls playing basketball who had to stop
their game to pet the puppy.

I
slept terribly last night.  Fortunately I was already kind of
awake at 4am when Petie started whining to go out.  I took him out
and he pee’ed right away!  Good dog!  Then I put him back in
his crate and returned to the hard work of sleeping.

He kept whining and crying.  I assumed it was because he was lonely and wanted to come out.

I
eventually went down and banged his crate with my open hand and told
him “No!  Quiet!”  He would quiet down for 30 seconds and
then start crying again.  I eventually decided I would take him
outside AGAIN in case he had to go #2.  I wasn’t happy about this
because it was amazingly humid and was, in fact, raining.  Let me
tell you it was pretty miserable at 4am to be outside in the rain.

Peterman made a bee-line for the grass and left a giant poo behind!!

How great!!  This whole time he was doing just what he was supposed to and I was wrong!  What a good dog!!

After
lots of praise I returned him to his crate and went back to bed.
He was quiet for the remaining 90 minutes of the night time.  I
got up at 5:45am and fed him before taking him outside again.  He
didn’t produce anything on this trip, but I don’t mind taking him out
for 10 or 15 minutes after he eats every morning.

So I’m wiped out today but I know that Mr. Doggersons is coming right along and is picking things up really well.

I
think he’s ready to start his training this week.  I think I’ll
take him for a walk every evening after supper to get him more used to
the leash.  Then I want to start on the basics like, “sit”,
“stay”, “come” and “down”.  Right now he’s pretty hit-or-miss with
“come”.

I guess that means he doesn’t get it yet.

The weekend has been good

The weekend has been good so far.
Yesterday we went to Toys-R-Us — apparently the kids have too much
disposable income so the needed to dispose of some of it. I think they
each got something in the $10 range.
Then we went to Brooksby Farms and picked up some fresh vegetables.
Finally we swung by Kane’s nursery in Davners and got a couple of
arrangements of plants to sit on either side of the steps.
In the morning we went to a place called Penzey’s in Arlington.
Penzey’s is a spice shop. When you walk in the front door the most
amazing smells waft in to the foyer. Cinamon and oregano and garlic. My
favorites are the mixes, like a sandwich sprinkle and some jerk spcies.
I got a good smelling rib rub that I’m just itching to try out. We need
to invite some guests over so I can try this rub.
It was a great store! I told Liz that I would drive her back there
whenever she wanted — every week if that’s what it takes! I figure
that her having whatever spices she wants can only work out well for
me!
Me and the boys are still planning on going fishing this afternoon.
Around lunchtime I guess.

I went over to REI

I
went over to REI today and picked up a new bike rack for the
Odyssey.  It’s a good Thule rack that’s capable of
holding FIVE bikes at a time!  I figure if we need to carry
more than five bikes at a time, we can worry about it then.

It’s
a pretty hot rack and I’m really excited about it because this means
I’ll be able to take the kids to some places that have been calling
to me.  For instance, there’s a great looking bike path
that leads from the highway over to Concord.  It looks like
there’s a great dirt road that takes you along the old ā€œBattle
Road†where the American Colonials harassed the retreating red coats
back in 1776.  While I don’t think I’ll get there
this weekend, I sure will sometime.  My neighbor, Mike said he was interested in going as well.
REI
was really, really busy.  I guess their Labor Day sale is
really well attended.  Afterwards, me and a buddy from work
went to The Duck Walk in Wakefield for Thai food.  It was
really good and we thoroughly enjoyed it.  The warm weather
was relaxing and after eating their food I always get a very satisfied
feeling of being at peace with everything.

Thai food really works for me.
This
evening I have some Battlestar Galactica lined up.  I’ll
need to take El Doggo for a walk somewhere.  I’d prefer to
go somewhere wooded – he likes it better and I find it more relaxing
too.  Maybe we’ll go to the Middlesex fells behind the
Flynn Rink.

Last night we took

Last
night we took Peterman to the Middlesex Fells again.  We went
behind the old Boston Regional Medical Center (BRMC) where the rusty
water tower is.  There’s a resovoir there and a gravel road and a
lot of other dogs.  Its a really great place for a walk.
We’re trying to get him used to walking on a leash.  He’s doing
better.

I also got word that my brother-in-law will be able to drive up from New Jersey to go fishing with us on September 10th!  Very exciting news!

The weather all weekend is supposed ot be warm and dry.  Its going to be PERFECT!

What
will I do with it?  Well, I think Saturday is wide open and I will
encourage Liz to do something she enjoys because she’s been saddled
with the kids all this week and will have them all next week,
too.  I think she would appreciate having a break from them.
I don’t think I have any urgent chores that need doing so maybe we can
focus on fun this weekend.

I saw that MassBike is having a Bike Festival
in Concord.  It looks like a lot of fun.  They have ride
distances for riders of all skill levels.  The shortest is 6.5
miles and the longest is 100km.  There’s BBQ and all kinds of
stuff.  Another year I will want to go, but I think this year
we’ll do something else.  I don’t want to leave the dog alone all
day and Liz and the girls couldn’t come with us.  I don’t think
this is the right year, but it looks like a lot of fun!

On
Sunday Liz has to take Chloe and Grace to a birthday party.  There
are a couple of girls who are similar in age to my girls and are having
a combined birthday party.  The boys weren’t invited, which is
fine.  But that leaves me and my boys about half a day to kill
without the women-folk around.  My plan is to go fishing.  I
know Chloe will be sad that she missed it.  But she’s got a fun
birthday party to go to.  To make it even more fun, I’m thinking
about taking the bikes.  So me and boys can drive to our
destination then bike to a good spot on the lake and then spend a while
fishing.

Doesn’t that sound great?  Well, it does to me.

I can take Sunday morning to do chores around the house — there’s always something.

PS: REI is havin a super duper special sale.
They’re taking clearance items, which are already
marked down and knocking an extra 50% off the
price when you add it to the basket.  The values
are outstanding!

Back when the newly designed

Back
when the newly designed Nissan Z350 came out I absolutely fell in love
with it. I think its one of the hottest cars on the road and really
gets my engine going. I remember the first time I saw one. It was in a
commerical in a movie theater.

Although I despise watching commercials in a movie theater this was an
exception. I had gone to see one of the Lord of the Rings movies and
this commercial came on. It showed a brand new Nissan Z350 zooming
through the cobble-stoned streets of Prague. It got up to 123mph as it
screamed around corners and zipped between other cars. The sound in the
theater was incredible and the camera angles were masterful.

When the commercial ended, more than anything else in the world, I wanted a new Z.

* s i g h *

Instead, I settled for the commercial. I called up Nissan and found out
how I could purchase the ad. I still have it on DVD. The little woman
tried to throw it away last month but I insisted that I still watched
it from time to time. At first I don’t think she believed me.

Then I think she just thoguht I was nuts.

Good news. There’s a new commerical. It doesn’t rev my engines the way the first one did but I still want that Z!

You
want an omelet pan?  I distantly remember this conversation, but
maybe it was with someone else.  Dude, this thing doesn’t come
with batteries or shit on the floor or get your flabby ass into
shape!  What do you want w/ an omelet pan?

I
have a smallish frying pan, but its frankly a little
large.  I like omlettes.  I can actually make them and
have them turn out pretty good.  This is a beautiful pan and I
think its orange color is really hot.

I covet this pan but can‘t bring myself to spend the $50+ for it.

Sadly, neither can anyone else.

I
like breakfast and I make all kinds of things for breakfast.
Well, you know, things *I* like.  Not waffles.  I don’t have
much use for waffles.  Know what my secret is for blueberry
pancakes?  Use frozen blueberries.  They come out great in
the pancake.

All manner of sausage and bacon.  The little woman likes
to keep the microwavable bacon around but I think its too thin to have
much flavor.  The thicker bacon is delicious but tends to produce
voluminous amounts of bacon grease - which I hate.  The best idea,
all around for cooking bacon is to use a cooling rack in the oven and
bake it.  The bacon drops all its fat on the cookie sheet you have
underneath the cooling rack and your bacon comes out crispy and
flavorful every time!

Naturally, cereal is a no-brainer.  I’m particularly fond of Frosted Flakes.

The
best kind of oatmeal is made in a crockpot.  No question.
And I will accept no argument on this fact.  Its indisputable.

I used to be ok with pizza for breakfast, but I can’t stand it now.

Chilli continues to be just fine, though.

Cottage cheese and fruit is outstanding for breakfast.  But it doesn’t leave me feeling satisfied like eggs and whatnot.

I still need to work on fritattas, breakfast burritos, eggs benedict and home fries.

See? I’ve decided to major in “breakfast”
