Karl Rove = Grima Wormtongue

Karl Rove = Grima Wormtongue from Lord of the Rings.

Except that Dubya is no Theoden, King of Rohan.  Dubya is more like…

    Gov. William J. LePetomaine (Mel
Brooks) in Blazing Saddles.  Remember the way he kept playing with
the ball-and-paddle game but couldn’t ever hit it?  That’s
definitely Dubya!

So its the middle of

So its the middle of the day on Wednesday.  Hump-hour of hump-day?

Something
like that.  Again, I failed to get out and ride my bike!  Its
very difficult for me to get up at 5:30am unless I’m in bed by
10pm.  10:30pm seems too late.

So
I went and spent some quality time at the gym.  It worked out
well.  I spent most of the time doing aerobic-type exercise with a
teeny bit of weight lifting at the end.  I think it did me some
good!  I can’t say I enjoy my time there, but I enjoy the result
of it.

I got a good haircut at lunchtime and picked up a BBQ chicken salad from Tennessee BBQ on the way back to the office.

I really wanted one of their honkin’ big burritos.

But I thought this would be better for me.

But I still wish I had gotten the burrito.

I’m
thinking of changing blogging software again.  There’s really
nothing wrong with Blogger — it just lacks pizzazz.  Or I haven’t
figured out how to spice it up yet.

This was Gracie’s second day

This
was Gracie’s second day at the YMCA day camp.  She actually wasn’t
supposed to be there at all this week except I goofed when I did the
scheduling and accidentally signed her up.  I thought it would be
a waste because she wouldn’t be potty trained.

I WAS WRONG!

HAH!

She made it all the way through her 3.5 hours of camp with no “accidents”!!

I’m very proud of the little girl.

Ben
went to the York Zoo in Maine today.  Lucky little stiff is going
all over the place.  The brochure that came home said that kids
could bring some spending money (up to $10) if they wanted, but it
wasn’t necessary.  Ben was all excited and started counting out
his pennies.

I gave him a fiver and told him to have a good time.

Getting
them to talk about what they do at camp is a real chore.  Its like
pulling teeth with these kids!!  I have to ask about every minute
detail.  Except with Chloe.  I have to confess that Chloe
needs little prodding to divulge the entirety of her day.  She’s
been feeling very cheated lately.  Somehow she feels like she ends
up with the short end of the stick on every decision lately.

And sometimes she does.  I should try to make it up to her somehow.

All
the kids had a great time at their first day at camp.  They all go
swimming every day.  The also seem to eat a lot of snacks.
Liz bought an enormous pile of snacks for them and I’m sure they’ll
devour them.

At work I’ve been put

At
work I’ve been put in charge of a small nearly inconsequential group
who are developing some standards and policies regarding SAP’s workflow
technology and how our company will go about administering it.
What complicates the issue is that this “workflow” module crosses
traditional lines deliniating responsibilities assigned to “the
business” and corporate IT.

I’ve
done a good job I think of moving the team in a productive
direction.  Today we met for two hours and actually produced a
document of which I think we can be proud.  I sent my director a
message thanking him for stopping by last week because somehow it
seemed to crystalize the fact that there was no putting-off our
responsibilities and we would have to sit down and start producing.

Few
people in the group have any kind of an analysis background.  Me
and one other person really moved the group in the right
direction.  I’m happy with it and I think my boss will be too.

Things are going well here.

Things are going well here.  The weather is too warm but not unbearable.

I didn’t bike yesterday or get to the gym.

I
didn’t bike this morning but I did get to the gym and worked out quite
hard.  I did 20 minutes of the eliptical machine — and I
should emphasize that this isn’t just killing time.  I’ve got the
incline set so its like going up a steep hill and the resistance is
turned way up.  I really put in a lot of effort on this sort of
thing.

After
that my routine says I should put in another 10 minutes on the
bike.  Screw my routine!  We don’ need no steenkin’ routine!

I
spent the next 30 minutes lifting weights and wow, am I sore now.
But its a good “sore”.  I did a lot of leg-work because of the
biking I’ve been doing and I can really feel it in my thighs.
I’ll have to make sure I stretch a lot this evening to make sure I can
still move in the morning!

I’m
still trying to get exercise in six days a week, but for the last month
at least I haven’t really come close to that.  Three days.
Four days, maybe.  I’m trying to do better.

For six years I lived

For six years I lived in New Jersey within an hour of the ocean.

In 1996 I moved to Boston and am currently about five miles away from the ocean.

At work, there’s a tidal river and a marina within 500 meters of the office.

I keep getting closer and closer.

I’ve
always wanted to go deep sea fishing.  By that I mean, salt-water
fishing for some big fish.  I’m not thinking of a particualr breed
of fish but I’ve heard blues and stripers are good.  But I’ve
never been.  Ever.

Its time.

A
friend from work has agreed that he would like to go so I am starting
to look in to what’s involved.  There are big operations that send
out these large boats with 30 - 50 men who all drop their lines in the
water simultaneously.  I see these photos and think that it does
NOT look like fun.

But
then there are smaller boats that will take you and five of your
friends out for half a day or a day.  The only one I’ve
looked at so far was $360 from 7am to 11am.  Split six ways this
comes to $60 apiece.  Its a little steep but I think its probably
worth it.  And I would pay that much not to get stuck on one of
those giant ships elbow to elbow getting my lines all tied in knots
with Bubba and his buddies.

So this is what I’m looking in to.  I’ll let you know how the plan progresses.

Yes, she sings a lot of synth-pop but I really dig her singing.

The weekend is never as

The
weekend is never as productive as I would like  it to be.
Well, a couple of weeks ago when we managed to put in a whole driveway
– THEN I felt like I accomplished something.

Friday
afternoon I left work and dropped my car off at the auto-body shop to
pick up the Odyssey.  I parked across the street at the high
school.  There was a baseball game going on and lots of kids
milling around.  I went home and at some supper then hopped on my
bicycle to go back and get the Sebring from the autobody shop.

When
I got there I put the top down on the car and popped off the front tire
of the bike so it would fit more easily in the back seat and everything
worked out just fine.  I ran a couple of errands and went
home.  When I got up the next morning I realized I didn’t have my
backpack full of exercise stuff - clothes, soap/shampoo/conditioner,
swimming goggles, swim suit, running shoes!  I thought I had left
it in the car but when I looked in there and couldn’t find it I realied
that someone had stolen my backpack when it was parked at the high
school!  I was so mad.  But I had left the car unlocked and I
should have realized what might happen.  I felt like a real
schnook.

I
have to say that the season premiere of Battlestar Galactica was very
good!  Its such a good show!  It had me on the edge of my
seat for 60 minutes!  I was fascinated by the story and the
characters and couldn’t wait to see how things turned out.
They’ve completely sucked me in and I am at their mercy.  I will
tune in every Friday night and stay up late to see what happens next.

Saturday morning I got up early and did my standard 12 mile route
I’m still trying to figure out a good way to get to the ocean.
There’s a highway in between me and the ocean and although there are
bridges and tunnels none of them are appealing to me right now.
I’ll need to study a map, I think.  I didn’t get up early this
morning and bike even though the weather wasn’t bad.  I mean, it
was humid as hell, but the temperature was fine.  I would have
liked to have gone out this morning.  Maybe tomorrow.

Chloe
was going to go to a theatrical production of Cinderella with her
kindergarten teacher, but there was a small fire under the stage
earlier this week and they cancelled the shows.

On
Saturday we ran some errands and wound up at two different Target
stores looking for a very specific DVD player — its a unit that will
play two different DVD’s and show the movies on two different
screens.  This is perfect for us because then the boys can watch
one and the girls can watch one.

Two Targets didn’t have it.  Today I’ll check the one that’s a block away from where I work in Danvers.

That
consumed a lot of time.  Liz picked up a new swimsuit for me and
some new soaps etc to replace the ones that had been stolen.  We
also went to a small Italian market near us that stocks very good
produce and products off the boat from Italy.  They also have a
good bakery section and prepared foods department.  They also have
an interesting meat section.

By
about 3:20pm I had the grill all fired up and the ribs were cooking
away.  Again, they were a hit!  I was so pleased that
everyone liked them as much as I did!  I think I ate about half
the ribs myself!  After they were done some of our guests hadn’t
arrived and we assumed they were not going to come.  So I settled
down and nibbled every bit of meat off rib-after-rib.  The kids
had hotdogs.  I also had a couple ears of grilled corn — I love
the way the grilling brings out a nice warm roasted flavor!

Eventually
I couldn’t eat any more and my guests showed up — I think there was
probably a whole rack left for them.  They enjoyed Liz’s deviled
eggs and her super potato salad.  They brought a to-die-for
blueberry pie!  WOW, it was good!

We
drank beer and talked and had a great time until about 7:30pm when I
took the kids in to get them cleaned up for bed.  The guests left
at about the same time.

All
in all we had a very good time hanging around in the backyard.  It
was so good that I want to talk to my carpenter friend about putting in
a deck on the back of the house.  Its something we’ve talked about
but I think I’d like to get more serious about it — it will mean that
we can use the backyard in a very different way than we have in the
past.

Liz
received her new Harry Potter book — she’s very excited about
it.  After reading the first couple of hundred pages she says its
quite good!  I’m about a book and a half behind and will have to
catch up soon!

I
mowed the yard on Sunday morning.  Afterwards I took the kids on
some errands with me for a few hours to give Liz some quiet time to
read her book.  We had a good lunch at Bugaboo Creek steakhouse
and tried to find a new backpack at REI.  My pack was larger than
a day-pack but smaller than a frame pack and it was very difficult to
find anything.  We wound up at Dick’s Sporting goods where I
bought some new running shoes and a new Kelty Redwing
Classic pack. Hmm… I couldn’t find a picture of the one I actually
bought, but its very similar to the one Kelty is currently
showing.  I got a very good price on it — half-ish of the
MSRP.  It was just as big as the old one and was even a prettier
color!

Overall I was quite pleased with the purchase.

Then
I took the boys to get their hair cut.  Finally, we were through
with all of our errands.  Whew!  It was nearly 3pm by the
time we got home.  I had time to try to get the last of the
scratches out of the Odyssey.  I used something called a
“claybar”.  Its a putty that comes with a lubricant.  You
spray the lubricant on the area and then rub this claybar over the
area.  I thought it would fill in the scratch, but I don’t think
it did.  Then I used a standard wax on the area to try and rub out
the scratch.  In some cases it worked just fine.  In all
cases it looked much better.  In one case, it left a little bit to
be desired.

Oh,
and great news!  Grace has only had ONE accident in the last
week!  At first she would only use her little potty at home.
This was enough for me.  I was just thrilled she wasn’t pooping in
her pants any more.  Then she was more willing to start using the
big potty.  Then yesterday when I took her out she pee’ed in one
potty and pooped in another!!

We’re so excited!! This is the first time in 9.5 years that we haven’t had someone in diapers!!  WHOOPEE!!

In fact, I threw out the diaper genies last night.

Huge.

This is huge.

So, now we’re going to get a puppy!  Just when you thought it was safe!

We
finished the evening off by sharing a little “grown-up dinner”.
This is a ritual Liz and I have where we feed the kids supper at their
regular time (five-ish) and then get something just for us around
8:30pm.  Last night I grilled up some dogs for the kids and fed
them some of Liz’s home made macaroni & cheese with some
carots.  Not gourmet fare, but they ate it.

I
had a fantastic white pizza from Polcari’s.  It was one of the
best pizzas I’ve ever had.  It was little — only 10″ but it was
wonderful!  Liz got her usual artichoke margherita.  They
have such good food there.

I
think that’s it for this weekend.  The kids are in day-camp this
week and loving it.  Even Grace!  She’s not wearing any
pullups or daipers or anything either.  Liz says its going well so
far.  We’re going to start getting ready for our trip to
Smuggler’s Notch next week.  We leave on Sunday and return the
following Saturday.  I’m planning on taking off the following
Monday (8/1) as well.

I’d say that post is long enough. Back to the grind.

PS:  Remember that green backpack
that got stolen? I found it under my
desk when I got to work this morning!!
It was never stolen at all!  Crap, what
do I do now?!  I think I have to see
if I can return the beautiful new pack.

Yeesh, what a dope.

I don’t know the

I don’t know the full story regarding the whole “Not Afraid” thing, but
I guess it has to do with a web designer in London. He’s posted a
pretty cool mosaic web page here:
He posted hundreds or thousands of photos that people had sent to him.
They all say something about not being afraid. The underlying thrust
being that the terrorists will get nowhere by bombing subways and
towers of innocents.

I put together my own picture:

Tonight is the start of

Tonight is the start of the second season of Battlestar Galactica!

At 10pm.

yeesh. What kind of old fart am I that the thought of staying up until 11pm makes me consider Tivo’ing it instead?!

Also Ron Moore’s podcast about the episode
has already been released. I could listen to it right away, but that
would spoil the episode.
Tomorrow, I leave early to go on a ride. I should still be back early
enough to get the kids their breakfast and whatnot. I’d also like to
try and go fishing sometime this weekend. I hope I can work it out.
We’re having a friend from work over for dinner tomorrow night. I’m
making ribs on the grill and cooking up some corn. I think Liz has
already made some potato salad. Should be a good meal.
OO! I need beer.
I think I’ll need to mow the grass. I may get more mortar to reinforce
Peterman’s Wall, too.
It should be a good weekend.
