HAH! For the first time in about five years I weighed in UNDER 260lb!

There’s a run in Somerville coming up called The Mystic River Herring Run — we don’t have a lot of herring around here, so I don’t know where the name comes from. http://www.mysticriver.org
In any case, it turns out five kilometers is 3.1 miles. Several times this week I’ve done 20 minutes on the eliptical machine, followed by 10 minutes on a bike and five minutes on a treadmill. Well, five minutes was clearly all I could handle because afterwards I was exhausted. I felt really good but I was completely tapped. I had nothing left. I worked hard on both machines before getting to the treadmill and I managed to job half a mile.
In five minutes.
I know that’s not very good, but believe it or not I find it very encouraging!
I could actually run for half a mile! To me, that’s quite an achievement! The kicker is that I managed to do this AFTER kicking my ass for 30 mintues on two other machines.
I should be able to walk a mile in 15 minutes. Lets say I can jog somewhat faster than I can walk — say, in 12 minutes. If I jog three miles, that would be a total of 36 minutes, which is still within the timeframe in which I’ve been exercising.
See, my concern is that I won’t be able to exert myself long enough and hard enough to be able to complete one of these things. And at least for the next few months I’m not even going to try. I think I would hurt myself. But these are benchmarks I can use while I’m working out so I’ll know if I’m ready to try one of these things.
Yesterday, after exercising in the afternoon, I weighed in at 261! I always lose 3 or 4 pounds of sweat when I exercise, so I guess my actual weight is something closer to 265.
Still too heavy to run five kilometers, but I should be available for races next spring!
I started off writing that last line feeling pumped and optimistic.
Now I’m looking at it thinking how lame that is.
Right now I seem to be losing about 10 pounds a month — 2.5lbs per week, which is pretty aggressive and its taking a lot of work. I don’t know how long I can keep it up. Ugh.
I should probably get back to work.

So today I worked for twenty minutes on bike followed by another twenty minutes on the elliptical machines. Someone there complimented me for extending my workout. I had actually give myself special permission to work out for an extra ten minutes. I feel kind of lousy about taking the time in the middle of the day to exercise — I feel like I should be doing my regular work. But last week, in spite of working out several times and not eating excessively I actually put ON some weight! I was very unhappy about this. I mean what am I working so hard for? To just start putting it on for no good reason?
Maybe there’s something at work here that I don’t understand.
Maybe I sit on my ass too often. So, I’m going to try to work out once during the day and once in the evening. Maybe the extra time doing cardiovascular exercises will burn more calories and keep me from munching calorie-heavy snacks.
Somehow I don’t think its going to happen, though.
Sphere: Related ContentThe weekend was almost good. On Saturday we had a t-ball parade to get
to. That turned out well. I walked with Chloe’s team and wore the team
t-shirt — I guess I’m kind of an assistant coach. I like the idea, but
because I have to spend a fair amount of time watching Grace I’m pretty
unreliable.
Ben’s soccer game was rained out.
I got an excellent workout in from 3pm until about 4:15pm. I worked my
ass off on the bike for about 20 minutes, then I did another 10 minutes
on an elliptical machines. Then I did a circuit of lifting weights.
Finally I came back and did another 10 minutes on the elliptical
machine again. I felt really great afterwards.
On Sunday I took Chloe, Grace and Ben with me to Rockport - I had
accidentally left my credit card there. It was still raining so they
weren’t really doing anything else. We sang along with the School House
Rock CD in the car. Ben sat in the front seat with me. I also passed
around my camera and let the kids take pictures of each other. When we
got there I got the kids some fudge, which they loved. A fish market
was selling “Salmon Snacks with dipping sauce”. I found this intriguing
so I bought some and it was delicious! It was smoked salmon with some
kind of dill sauce. I also had a latte which was really nice because
we’d been walking around in the rain. The kids were great — really
well behaved.
When I got home I got word from work that there had been a fire and all
the electricity was off in our North American HQ. The fire marshal was
saying that he’d have to shut the facility down for two days! So me and
all the other infrastructure people traveled to the disaster recovery
site, which is about an hour away to start failing over.
When we got there we found out that some electricians felt they could
go around the burnt out conduit & transformer and maybe they could
get power back by 7pm or 8pm. So we were told to hoof it back to HQ.
Once we got there we discovered the whole building lit up like it was
Christmas! Every light in the place was on! Except in the computer
room, where it was completely dark. The electricity is routed through a
UPS (and maybe a generator) that’s supposed to protect the machines
from power surges. Unfortunately there was something wrong with the
wiring and we weren’t getting any juice.
Then the fire alarm went off because the smoke detector’s battery
backups were failing. The fire department showed up and we were stuck
outside for another 45 minutes or an hour. Finally we were allowed back
in and they were able to get some power to our core networks and
servers. At last some of our people were able to start working. I
didn’t happen to be one of them. I cooled my heels for a couple of more
hours until about 9:30pm or 10pm.
Then we started bringing up the SAP application on all the servers for
which we are responsible. ERP, CRM, EBP, PLM and BW! Each of these
acronyms represents a “constellation” of development, quality assurance
and production servers and each one of those may be made up of a
database server, application servers and/or secondary servers (J2EE,
pricing engines, image services, etc). There were three of use working
to bring up these applications and it took quite a while. I was told to
go home around 11:15pm and the last person from my team got to bed
@3am. There were good parts to the weekend and … well, less good.
Today I’ve been recovering from our disaster and finally seem to have a
handle on things again — its noon now.
1. Please don’t misunderstand — I have a long way to go in losing weight and its going to take time.
2. Even after I lose the weight, I would need to train regularly to even be able to contemplate something like this
3. I would REALLY like to do something like this! Frankly, it does look like fun. I’ve always admired the Ironman triathalon athletes and one day I would really like to try some of those. As always, not so much with an eye towards winning — I’ve never been fast compared with my peers — but more with an eye towards competing and being able to finish a race.
Some day, I’m going to do one or some of these.
Please settle a disagreement the little woman and I are having. How can you tell which shaker holds the salt and which holds the pepper?
Thanks.
I’m reading the blog that (I think) the director is putting out…
maybe he’s a producer or something. Writer? In any case, he answers
questions on a regular basis from fans. I like this one:
HAHA! This cracks me up! I’ve always hated Boxey and couldn’t be
happier that he’s not on this show! What a treat!
I’m not crazy about the possibility he could come along and spoil it,
but from the way they’ve run the show so far, I don’t think they would
do that to me.
I know now that its not the router. I was able to perform several FTP’s
from my laptop’s wireless connection. Therefore, its something local to
my desktop. I know I have the firewall software turned on and I thought
I tried turning that off last night, but maybe I did it wrong? So I’ll
try that again. In the meantime I should probably post something more
interesting than a week-old blog post.
This morning I got in an
excellent stationary bicycle ride. By that I just mean I worked my ass
off for an amount of time that I thought was appropriate. I understand
that some people say that all you really need to do is elevate your
blood pressure somewhat to receive the benefits of moderate exercise.
It seems to me that with more effort I can burn more calories and
improve my cariovascular system to put up with even more stress. I’d
like to be able to do some endurance sports… when I drop a lot of
weight. So whenever I exercise I try to execute it “vigorously”. I
don’t think I’m exercising enough, though. Yes, I’m getting in my 30+
minutes about 5 or 6 times a week, but not as much is happening as I
would like. I’ve switched belts to a smaller one and my shirts aren’t
as tight. Some of my fat has turned to muscle partially accounting for
why my weight loss has been slower than I had hoped. But I think I need
to put in more workouts per week — in the evening for instance. “Fewer
calories in, more calories out” is my current mantra.
I also like “don’t sweat the petty things and don’t sweat the petty things”.
They both have their place.
My
mother-in-law continues to visit. All is well there. I think we’re
going to ask her to babysit on Friday and we’ll go out and look at new
grills. We’re pretty crazy with our dates. “Extreme Dating” — we
always end up at Home Depot or some place like that. Sometimes we go
out to movies, but not very often. Not like we used to anyway.
The weather is stunning! 83 degrees! Tomorrow the high will be 55. Spring in New England is crazy.
What
should I do for Mother’s Day? I have two mothers for whom I need to
account. Additionally I should make sure my kids do something for their
mother.
Hmm…
