Medical news…

Oh and the three-year old with Leukemia had to go back to the hospital with a urinary tract infection that is supposed to be of a particularly nasty variety.  I feel so bad for that family.  They’ve been through so much.

Additionally I found out that my father in law was just in the hospital for a week with an infection in his foot complicated by his diabetes.  He’s always maintained that he could eat sugar and that anyone who disagreed just didn’t understand how this stuff worked.  He didn’t let us know.  He didn’t let his family know.  His brother emailed my wife’s uncle to say what was going on.

I think Liz has already sent something to him.

preparations

I bought a new suit today.  I didn’t have a dark suit appropriate for weddings, funerals and job interviews.  So its supposed to be available Tuedsay by 4pm.  It fit pretty well right off the rack and only needed the cuffs hemmed.  I’ll need to polish my shoes and get some new shoe laces — my old ones broke several times so I have little stubby laces going through half the grommets barely holding the shoes together.  However, the shoes are in very good shape — just with retarded shoe laces.  I think I’ll get a nice hair cut tomorrow, too.  Never can be TOO well groomed, I always say.

I was talking to someone who did a bunch of interviews recently and I remarked that I had gone out to lunch recently with someone who bought some new shoes for the interview.  He commented that it didn’t distinguish the interviewee from the others.  He went on to say that it was the people who did NOT buy new shoes that distinguished themselves — negatively.  Eight out of ten people looked good and were well groomed.  Two people wore their usual stuff and clearly weren’t taking the process seriously.

I’ve always felt that shoes especially were like that.  Nobody is going to look at you and say “What a fabulous pair of shoes!”  But they may look at you and mentally note “What a crappy pair of shoes”.  That’s why I’ve always tried to go for very unobtrussive shoes.  Plain even.

I plan on sending thank-you notes to the interviewers to thank them for their time, to underscore why I think I’m good for the job and to make sure they know I’m interested and well-prepared.

I also plan on going over some of the most commonly asked questions and preparing answers to them.  I’d better track those down PDQ!  And I want to emphasize my leadership skills, my successes over the last eight years, that my focus is to solve problems and make progress (results-driven and goal-focused!).

Maybe I’ll write up a card with the five points I want to highlight over and over again to make it easier to keep those things in my head and on the tip of my tongue.

I think I’ll have to keep my wits about me!

"Thrash" from the way back machine

So I was reading an article at Salon.com and it was about Husker Du’s 25th anniversary.  They talked about the music scene from the 1980’s, which was MY time.  Sure, grunge came later and the put out some interesting stuff.  But the music I listened to while I was defining myself all came out in the middle of the 1980’s.

No, it wasn’t Ratt or Van Halen or Madona or the GoGo’s.  They were cute and everything, but not the music I related to.  For me, the birth of “Alternative” was what really got me going.  I was in to Skateboards and hanging around with my friends.  This article at Salon.com mentioned some band names that really took me back like, Husker Du, Minor Threat, TSOL and Black Flag.  I knew ALL these bands!  It struck a chord and it made me go out the internet and grab a bunch of tracks and go over some of my old collections.

When I was in high school I spent every dime I could get on vinyl or magnetic tapes of my favorite bands.  My 8th grade art teacher turned me on to the Violent Femmes.  From there it got faster and louder.  When I was reading this article and came across “Minor Threat” I thought first of “Dag Nasty” — I remembered they were similar but I couldn’t place Minor Threat.  I thought about it and let the name bounce around my skull for a while and then it came to me.  A word that I hadn’t anuncianted in years:   “Thrash”

It was thrash music.  It was hardcore and “alterntive” a decade before EVERYTHING became alternative.  I still have TSOL but now its on CD.  I still have The Replacements but they’re next to Johnny Cash and Live and the Goo Goo Dolls.

I’m fairly certain my kids will hate my music, but what could they come up with that’s more offensive than Bad Brains?

  • Hey Micky, you’re so fine
  • You’re so fine, you blow my mind!
  • Hey Micky!  Hey Micky!”
