Gizmo

  1. I got a new print server gizmo so Liz and I can share the Epson Stylus Photo 925 I have in the basement. The gizmo (model HPS1U) is made by Hawking Technology. Make sure you jot that name down and DON’T EVER BUY ANYTHYING FROM THEM! They’ve put together the biggest piece of crap in this single-port wired print server! It was a pain to install and I couldn’t get it configured so it would work correctly. I spent maybe 3 hours trying to get it to print ANYthing besides an insipid test page. Did I mention I’m an IT professional and I work with products like this all the time? This is actually a “professional opinion”. So I have to take it back today and compel CompUSA to take their garbage back. Like someone at Epinions.com said, I’ll buy something reliable from D-Link instead. I’ve already got a router from them I like.
  2. The same day I swung by RatShack and purchased a small assortment of potentiometers that I will use in my robot project. I haven’t gotten to try them out yet, but the weekend is coming up and I am looking forward to some spare time in the evenings. The weather should be outstanding so I am hoping to have very little spare time during the day. Ben and Gabe have a soccer game and I think Chloe has a t-ball game. I have a run-away honeysuckle that needs an attitude adjustment and a honkin’ big pile of mulch that needs to be distributed.
  3. Happy 8th birthday to Ben! He lost a third tooth yesterday. I need to post a picture because he’s starting to look pretty funny. I mean cute. “adorable”. you know.
  4. Ben stayed home from school yesterday because he wasn’t feeling well. Last night he had some diarrhea and finished the evening off by vomiting in a bowl! Isn’t that excellent? No, I mean isn’t it great that he was able to keep it in the bowl? I think so.

A mixed bag…

I sat down to write this thinking that so far my day had started off pretty poorly. See, on my way to work I stopped at Starbucks for a treat. I wanted a triple grande latte. Its a treat because its nearly a $4 cup of coffee. While I was waiting I saw a sign saying that my favorite coffee, Ethiopian Sidamo, would be unavailable until June 30th.

When I asked why there would be a delay in my favorite coffee, the girl behind the counter (technically a “barista”, right?) said “There’s some kind of problem over there. Hey Janelle! Isn’t there some kind of, like, drought in Ethiopia?”

Janelle confirmed that there was. And I went through some minor flashbacks involving Bob Geldoff in the desert, Hands-Across-America, LiveAid and The Boss standing next to A Flock of Seagulls.

It was all very 80’s.

Then I got to work and — I’m glad nobody was around to see this — I struggled to get out of the car with my computer, a newspaper and my favorite $4 cup of coffee and managed to accidentally throw the foamy coffee all over my shoes! I must have looked like a real spazz.

Now I’m drinking the garbage they serve in the canteen and I’m stuck at work for another 9 hours.

But then I realized that even though I’ve only been awake for a little over an hour all is not lost! When I left the house this morning the sun was shining, the temperature was in the sixties and there was a free newspaper (Boston Globe) wedged in my door.

All things considered, this morning is a bit of a wash.

Wait, today is Bob Edwards last day at Morning Edition. That pushes today in to the “bad” category.
